President is a poor leader

President is a poor leader

To the editor:

I am not bothered by Bush supporters who gloat because this time their man actually received more votes than the opposition. What annoys me is the clamoring for people who did not vote for Bush to shut up and get behind the president.

He has done very little I can support. Furthermore, I find it curious that some people say they support Bush because he is a Christian. His deeds do not suggest the Christianity I was taught, but they illustrate why I cannot get behind the president.

None of the following are what I consider Christian: belligerence, stubbornness, hypocrisy, lying about “war as a last resort,” sending troops into battle who are not adequately equipped, promoting war against one nation because we were attacked by terrorists from different nations, the arrogant dismissal of others’ opinions — especially generals who know how to conduct war — relaxing laws to help curb environmental pollutants that cause birth defects. Not even the death penalty is particularly Christian.

I cherish our individual freedoms. What frightens me most about the current administration is the pandering to people who would trample those freedoms.

Religious zealots attacked this nation on Sept. 11, 2001. Religious zealots murdered people in Salem under the excuse that the victims were witches. Religious zealots imprisoned Galileo for stating the truth about the Solar System. Just recently Bryce Christensen has expressed concern over cohabitation, casual divorce and “deliberate childlessness,” all of which sounds like something out of the Taliban.

I do not feel President Bush understands that freedom of religion also means freedom from religion. A great leader needs to consider the rights of all. Trampling individual rights because you won an election is not good leadership, and I refuse to get behind a president who is such a poor leader.

3. not only is the death penalty not 'particularly' Christian...
Edited on Thu Dec-02-04 11:02 AM by Liberaltarian
it's not even REMOTELY Christian...

judge not, lest thou be judged...
vengence is mine, sayeth the lord...
let he who is without sin cast the first stone...

Old testament rules and laws given by god to the wandering isrealites DO NOT apply- for REAL "Christians", the words and teachings of Christ are supposed to supercede the old testament.

5. You forgot the biggie:
"Thou shalt not kill." Obviously, that one's only convenient to post in Alabama courthouses but not to follow.

11. but therein lies the irony

the old testament teaches hate just about everybody and have a few slaves and a few wives and don't steal from the rich who have gotten rich of your slave labor and much worse stuff. the new testament mostly about jesus and love and getting along "let he who is without sin etc". and supposedly is the gospel of the right wing "CHRISTians. where is the disconnect here? it is as if right wing christians are simply trashing jesus in favor of a much more sinister hate filled old testament gleaned from an amalgam of far more ancient religions when people hadn't really got a lot of sense, and had to worry about someone killing him to eat his goat. simply put, because the old testament matches their own hate filled conscience more than the love of jesus who brings everybody under his tent; and by the by how democratic is that? there is no question jesus would have been a democrat. so what i am saying here is quite revolutionary. the old testament is the handbook of the repukes and the new testament is the handbook of the democrats. and clearly they do not mesh. so from this old atheist who thinks jesus was one of the great philosophers hallelujah brother

12. Not all the Old Testament
Read the prophets in the back of the book. They sound like socialists at times.

10. bush is a moral leper
Similar to Typhoid Mary, he spreads his disease of moral leprosy. Those with reality-based thinking are usually immune. Those who see the world in black vs. white, good vs. evil, are particularly susceptible to catching this disease and then feel compelled to spread it to others.

It's very contagious, very dangerous to the health of our nation.
