How unbelievable cool my new Sirius radio is.....
Finding myself spending way too much time at the computer because I couldn't tear myself away from streaming Air America radio, I just had to have one in my car so we could get food, medicine and other vital things so we could continue to live.....

IT I THE BEST THING I EVER, EVER DID!!!

I can listen to hearings on C-Span, or cable news, and of course every single program on Air America. I love not having to fiddle with CD's anymore because of the million music stations.

What finally drove me to buying one was being sick and tired of corporate controlled media; along with the FCC; along with no fairness doctrine regarding opposing views.

If progressives ever have the hope of getting their message out it won't be with traditional methods. The Internet and satellite radio are it!!

3. Question: Do you get the full 4 hours of Randi Rhodes or do
you get 2 of Ed Schultz and 2 of Randi. I ask because I have XM radio and that is what I get. Ed and Randi.

4. FULL AAR SCHEDULE on Sirius. A great reason to chose it over XM
Plus, XM is part-owned by Clear Channel.

7. You have two liberal talk stations on Sirius, on carries AAR
in its entirety. The other has all kinds of other stuff, but carries Ed's whole show.

You can have 'em both for their whole show :)

6. How is the quality for the music?
I'd definetely get it over XM (I couldn't stand getting something partly owned by CC - after all that's what I'm running AWAY from!).

But how's it for music? Is the quality the same for both?

through an FM modulator (some say that will degrade the fidelity). And the variety of music streams is excellent.... here's the list:

8. It's all I have on my list for Christmas.
The car unit and the boom box port for my house. You can use the same unit in the car and then bring it in and plug it into the boom box in the house without the need for an external antenna attached to the house. And, with the boom box port, you can take it anywhere you go -- the beach, waiting in line to vote, the park on a sunny afternoon -- just anywhere!

I can get some progressive stations on my regular AM radio in my car but the static is soooooooo distracting to anyone else riding with me (I listen through the static because I want the info that much), that it was suggested to me as a gift for me. I can't wait!

10. I got Sirius because of Air America. I wonder how many subscriptions
they got because of that. I use to listen to AAR all the time, but since the election it is just too sad. Strangely, I've found that I can longer listen to Franken. I can't stomach his repugnantcan 'pals'. Now on Sirius, am listening to BBC world news, Thom Hartmann, raw dog comedy (really need a laugh nowadays), and jazz. There is something for everyone.

11. Thanks for the great reviews...
...do they make a "walkman" model yet? I've been looking into signing up, but 90% of my radio listening time is during my walkies and haven't seen such an item in their info. I'm in a heavily infested "red" area, which took Stern off the air several years ago for "low" ratings (yeah, right), so I know we'll never get AAR :(

12. Id be interested in this as well
I have scoured the internet trying to find out if Sirius has a "walkman" type of receiver.

I almost exclusively listen to radio at work and on public transportation, both places, I need headphones

I found that XM has a handheld model ($350..ouch!) coming soon, but I want to get Sirius for all the aforementioned reasons...

Anyone know anything?

a bit large, but it is designed to be carried around and listened to with headphones. You also have to have the unit in the middle already

Is there any other equipment I would need? Sorry for the silly questions, but I'm so technically challenged (after two years, I'm still learning how to use my cell phone...ackkkk).

I'm going to visit the Sirius website today with hopes of having some basic info, like whether or not I have to put a 12 story receiving tower in my yard....:silly:

19. No tower needed
I have a little tiny satellite receiver that runs from my window to my rain gutter and it works great. The only reason that I have it near the roof is because I have very large eaves to keep out the sun and they also block the reception. Otherwise, a window sill works fine.

26. BestBuy model is $119.....
...and while reading up on Sirius at their website, noticed the same model (?) is $99 with a $30 rebate offer. Yay!

Other than the subscription.....what other items would I need to purchase? Have studied the website, and I'm certain I need a home based unit also?

How does this work with my Everywhere needs on my frequent trips to NYC and Miami in planes, trains and automobiles <ggg> Not to mention my 5 mile walkies?

Again, thanking you all for your help....I'm going to have me a very Merry Christmas!

21. I do
I have a boom box in the house. But I already had Sirius set up permanently in the car, so I use the second setup for times when I am not in that car. Everything works great, except I have to pay for a second satellite beam. I thought that I would switch the car to portable, but I'm too comfortable with not having to move the receiver from car to house. Maybe when the annual bill comes in I'll get motivated.

if you get the car kit and the home kit. Don't even need the boombox if you can plug into the auxiliary jacks on your home stereo.

If i'm not mistaken isn't there a monthly subscription fee for Sirius as well. Also, as asked here from someone else, is there a unit that can go from home to auto?

and I'm not sure exactly what the basic Sirius cost is,'cause the state of Florida levies a huge tax on it. But I think it's about $125 plus whatever taxes your state takes.

25. I have the Audiovox boom-box
and I think a JVC in the car. But the one in the car is one of the first units that came out.

I just checked the Sirius website and it looks like they keep improving them, including the portable units, so I can't give you any info on the latest Sirius stuff that's on the market.

I sure would like a walkman type when they come out. But the pictures on the Sirius website are showing a completely different basic receiver than the one on my boom-box. So if you're thinking walkman, wait a bit to see what Sirius comes up with and if it's compatable with the current receivers.

I think I'll go browse my local Radio Shack where they carry Sirius and take a better look.

30. Radio Shack has their own...
version of the Audiovox, and that's about it.

I got the Radio Shack one and it worked well until it got stolen.

Called Sirius and they gave me a great half price deal on the Clarion, which works almost as well. Additional units are heavily discounted by Sirius if you buy from them.

31. Got Sirius . . . .
about two months ago because of Air America. I live in New Jersey and can tune to WLIB, but the reception was really poor.

I got the package that Sirius offers with the tuner, boom box, car adapter plus another adapter that works with your stereo. Mr. Suziq and I loved it so much, we invested in a Sirius-ready radio for our Jeep. Best money we ever spent!

Enjoying AAR, Radio Left, my 60's music station (revealing my age ;-)), being able to listen to Washington Journal (to start my day off aggravated) on the C-SPAN channel, etc.

For the price - $20 and some change per month for the two Sirius tuners - it is well worth it!

:hippie:

37. I'll probably get it one day.
The variety and depth of stations are incredible. You could be the biggest punk fan in the world, and you'll hear great punk rock that you've never even heard of before. With no commercials. It's great stuff.

Still, I mourn the loss of radio-wave radio. They're OUR airwaves afterall. They don't belong to the fucking corporations. I worry that the advent of satellite radio will make it all that much easier for old fashioned radio to become more difficult to gain access to (as a broadcaster), and more difficult to find something worth listening to. As if it isn't hard enough for both now...
