A Useful Way to Starve the Beast: "NO BULK MAIL, PLEASE. THANKS!"
Edited on Fri Dec-03-04 02:08 PM by frank frankly
I posted a cheerful note on my mailbox with this message: "No Bulk Mail, Please. Thanks!"

I have been delighted to stop participating in the consumption of junk mailing (almost all advertising, of one variety or another.) It seemed that the bulk of junk mail I was receiving was increasing each day and it was way past time to STOP.

I live in an apartment building and it will be interesting to see if anybody else follows suit. I hope so!

:hi:

1. Though "junk" mail is sent for less money than 1st class. . .
and is indeed mainly advertising, it helps subsidize the cost of all mail and thus reduces your personal postage costs considerably.

If your mail carrier is tossing your bulk mail instead of putting it in your box, they are taking a considerable risk as interference with mail delivery -- no matter how its done -- is a federal offense.

I find a better approach to junk mail is, if the sender is foolish enough to include a pre-paid business reply envelope, stuff everything that was sent to you -- including any other junk mail that came that day -- into the pre-paid envelope and send it back to them. They have to pay for it, no matter how much it weighs. You won't be surprised how quickly you get dropped from any additional mailings.

3. another benefit of returning everything in the postage paid envelope
...is that the person who they pay to open those envelopes might, at that very moment, be in dire need of a new set of collector NASCAR plates, or a great deal on a new Chrysler, or a low cost pre-approved loan, or...
So everybody wins!

I never let a postage paid envelope go to waste.

4. Or give them a real treat
and shred it all before you put it back in the envelope.
