3. wow....
as a person who grew up in a home with violence, these bring back some bad memories... I hope they give the people who haven’t ever had to live with it a taste of what I went though & what I work all the time to make sure I don’t repeat the cycle of.

4. I have very mixed feelings for these...
I personally found the ads beyond terrifying. I was a victim of spousal abuse for more years than I want to count before having the guts to get out with my kids. I think that while these ads put it right out there that this is unacceptable, I also think they could possibly incite more violence.

On top of all that, I would hate for my kids to see something like this on TV.

5. These commercials should be banned.
Domestic violence will go away if we all pretend it doesn't exist.

6. NO. absolutely not, like WARN somebody or something
Jaysus, I'm still shaking.

No. Do NOT give people ideas.

No. Do NOT make people re-live their trauma.

7. These need to be seen
And the point they make is one that needs to be heard. Too often the excuse for police, or neighbors, or other family not intervening was that "it's their business what happens in their own home." But this iterates that such behavior IS. NOT. ACCEPTABLE. in ANY venue.

8. The question is whether or not such a message might be expressed
With less graphic commercials. Nobody I think would question the suggestion that we need to do something more about spousal abuse (well hopefully nobody). But is this the right approach to getting that message across.

My opinion is no. I agree with what some of the other posters have said. Just because something is more graphic more in your face that does not always make it better.

9. I think the graphicness is necessary
So often, I've heard from friends who had been in a violent relationship, that they didn't think it was that bad, that he "just" tried to choke her, it's not like he pointed a gun at her or anything. Or they were raised in an atmosphere where this is the norm. Showing that behavior in a different context makes it obvious how ugly and unacceptable this is.

10. Overdone
Demonstrating only Battery as domestic abuse? Thats pretty easy for all of us to grasp. But what about Verbal and/or Emotional Abuse. Doesn't this message cheapen Verbal/Emotional assaults?

11. Excellent Commercials
As someone who works in the field, I think these commercials are powerful and brilliant. Yes they are graphic and disturbing - but so is domestic violence and for far too long this issue has been out of sight and out of mind. I say Bravo to our Canadian friends!

12. Those brought back bad memories.
:(

Personally, I think that if a woman shoots a man who has a history of abusing her (even if he isn't actually abusing her when she shoots him), the maximum crime she should be able to be convicted of should be a misdemeanor....say 5 days in jail.

13. I was in tears watching
but it's amazing how they will show the same things in movies or tv shows and call it entertainment. Once it gets serious and real, then it gets banned.

I do sympathize with those who have been through it. I did too, for a couple of years. I still get scared even when someone just raises their voice.

15. Every time the police were called to my house
because of my husband's behavior, they said it was a "domestic disturbance." All the while I was thinking about what that commercial is saying. I can see how it may cause some to react in a negative fashion though. It is rather violent for a commercial/PSA to be played during regular viewing hours. I have a feeling that it is the violence, not the message. :grouphug: for survivors.
