Feds indict man on "conspiracy" for trying to save mountain lions |
|
PRESS RELEASE: December 2, 2004 >email: rod@resist.ca >
>SABINO CANYON LION DEFENDER TO BE INDICTED ON FEDERAL CONSPIRACY CHARGES >
>On December 2nd at 11:00am at the Evo A. DeConcini Federal Courthouse, federal prosecutors will formally indict Chukshon Earth First! (CEF!)activist Rod Coronado on conspiracy charges related to the localenvironmental group's interference with the hunt for mountain lions in Sabino Canyon last March. The indictment comes just seven days beforeCoronado was to stand trial for three lesser misdemeanor charges filed after his arrest in Sabino Canyon on March 26th. The new charge, "Conspiracy to Impede or Injure an Officer" carries a maximum penalty of six years in prison. > >Last March when Arizona Game & Fish Department (AZGFD) and US Forest >Service officials attempted to remove four-to-five mountain lions from Sabino Canyon, Coronado with Chukshon Earth First! organized a campaign of interference that included nonviolent tactics such as the spreading of false lion urine scent to lead AZGFD hunting hounds away from the real lions. Coronado and a reporter from Esquire magazine were originally charged with violating a federal closure and disabling a steel-cable snare set by AZGFD to capture a lion. > >Coronado believes the indictment is in response to his continued >organizing against AZGFD controversial policies such as the killing and removal of lions from the Coronado National Forest and the trophy >hunting of sandhill cranes and desert bighorn sheep in southern Arizona. In November, Coronado was part of a CEF! investigation team that exposed AZGFD?s annual trophy hunt for sandhill cranes south of Willcox, AZ.
>"It's just an Orwellian attempt to intimidate me for criticizing and drawing attention to AZGFD policies that cater to urban sprawl and trophy hunters. If AZGFD continues controversial programs such as lion eradication, trophy desert bighorn sheep and sandhill crane hunting, CEF! will continue to document and expose those abuses of public lands and wildlife." > >Unless taken into custody, Coronado will be available for interviews >following his arraignment. Video documentation of Chukshon Earth >First!'s efforts to protect mountain lions, black bears, Gunnison's >prairie dogs, mule deer, elk and sandhill cranes from the hunter's guns is available uon request. >

1. Coronado has served time |
|
for arson at a Michigan State University research facility.
Some quotes from him: "I love fire, be it around a campfire with friends or when consuming an empty fur farm, animal laboratory or luxury condominum built on the homes of my animal relations." (In "In Case of Fire, Let It Burn" by Rod Coronado, Earth First! Journal, vol. 23, no. 6, Sept. 1, 2003.)
"I wish I didn't have to stand up here and talk about and justify and encourage direct action - encourage breaking the law, encourage burning down buildings that are built for life's destruction - but I do." (6th National Conference on Organized Resistance, Washington, D.C., Jan. 24-26, 2003.)
"You know, those people - I think they should appreciate that we're only targeting their property. Because frankly I think it's time to start targeting them." (Speaking of corporations that fear for the safety of employees in the wake of ALF attacks, 6th National Conference on Organized Resistance, Washington, D.C., Jan. 24-26, 2003.)
I don't like the fact that an endangered species is being hunted. But Coronado is NOT the person to put in charge of stopping it.

some people are willing to lay thier asses on the line to try and stop the total carnage of what remains of the natural world and others would rather whine and cry when anybody does anything other than meaningless symbolic acts like holding a sign on a street corner.
You shouldn't condemn people who are willing to fight the good fight and lose everything for the sake of it.
Direct Action is the only thing that will ever make a difference. It is delusional to think the powers that be care about someone sitting on a street corner with a sign. It has absolutely no effect.

Maybe not as much as it could have, but it's definitely gotten better than it was.

14. King was shot when he wanted to take on larger, structural issues... |
|
Edited on Fri Dec-03-04 05:19 PM by villager
The ruling elites can waive a cross burning or two. But when King wanted to lead a poor people's march on Washington, a "lone nut" showed up "in the nick of time."
Besides, any such perceived gain will be wiped out when/if the biosphere collapses... And the other side will not give up control of "resources" without a fight...

If the "ruling elite" sent the "lone nut" "in the nick of time" to kill Dr. King, they'd have whacked him long before he actually died.

They successfully destroyed the civil rights movement with the murder and incarceration of key people all throughout the 60's not only with the Black Panther movement but also with the American Indian movement as well. They no longer need to sick dogs on the civil rights activists since most of them were neutralized. This was all a part of Cointelpro but then you know all about that don't you

why is it that interracial couples can walk down the street now without having to seriously worry that they'll get lynched?
When you're talking about the Black Panthers and AIM, you forgot to include groups like the Weathermen...
Blowing shit up and killing cops isn't what I'd generally consider to be a "civil rights movement".

acceptance of interracial dating is not a threat to those who comprise the elite, but the battle MLK and others were beginning to wage was one that would fundamentally change the nature of that power relationship and that is what had to be eliminated.
Seems pretty clear you buy into a boatload of propaganda regarding AIM and the Black Panthers. So much for you knowledge regarding Cointelpro.
Next your gonna tell me Dragnet is an accurate portrayal of the function of the FBI.

when the FBI murdered those in the American Indian Movement they were fighting for the rights and their independence but you can believe in the line of bullshit the FBI put out if you want.
There was a systematic effort to destroy the civil rights movement as a whole and smear tactics were just as much a part of it as murdering activists.

Doctor in Amherst New York (Near me) seemed to draw rave reviews from the anti-abortionists.
Not to mention the bomber fool hiding out in North Carolina.
And the church burnings through out the south.
And the in your face picketing at woman's clinics.
All violence and killings. It works. Violence of any type intimidates.

that people think that violence is the ONLY answer to anything.
We've managed to reintroduce the red wolf and the bobcat to SC lowcountry wildlife...and protect them...without any violence. It didn't take violence to keep the whooping crane from going the way of the dodo and the passenger pigeon although they are starting to slip again because of the policies of the government.
I condemn anyone who uses violence. Because I KNOW it isn't necessary. I've been involved in many, many efforts that have brought results without endangering or harming anyone physically.
And why don't you use the right words if they are so right? DIRECT ACTION is nothing but a euphemism for violence.

and while I applaud the wild critter reintroductions -- hell, we need grizzlies rampaging through Orange and San Diego counties, in California -- note what is happening to the wolf in Alaska, and the wild horses in the lower 48.
Now, if those wolf-murdering helicopters were to be disabled before they could take off, would you really be that heartbroken?
