Turning the corner in Iraq... |
|
At the onset of the Vietnam war, the war or military action, was viewed as something that needed to be done in regards to the spread of communism. However, after the first couple of years the war, around 1966, the protests began. My question is, what was it that made the publics view change? And, Are we seeing the first steps in that direction now?

1. From what I understand, US casualties |
|
sharply increased. As to your second question, I hope so.

God, I don't know where you are, but where I am it is looking the exact opposite. I live on a military base -- but that is not the "where" I am talking about. On the base it is looking the same: ranging from a "fuck this war" to a forced, unenthusiastic "I support the war".
Outside the base I see people being more supportive of this damn illegal disaster.

5. The press was more open about reporting casualties and atrocities |
|
I remember watching the news and seeing Americans killed. You'll never see that today. Today the majority of reporters are cheerleaders for the administration.

8. I've seen very few photos of wounded US troops this time and |
|
no video of wounded/killed US troops. This war is being censored.

9. We'll turn the corner just after we see the light at the end of the... |

tunnel. For any who are old enough to remember that war's stupid slogans.
Is that too long for a bumpersticker: We'll turn the corner in Iraq just after we see the light at the end of the tunnel.

10. Turning the corner and running into a brick wall. |
|
The continued picking off of US soldiers and the mental and physical damage this illegal war will do to our men and women will be what turns the people out to the streets. It just takes time with Americans...we are too comfortable.

11. there was an issue of Life Magazine that had page after page . . . |
|
of photos of American servicemen killed in Vietnam in ONE WEEK . . . I forget the number, but it was well into the hundreds, possibly even a thousand or more . . . each page had 30 or 40 photos, and there must have been 20 or 30 pages . . . that issue got a lot of people asking whether it was worth it . . .

12. Imagine if something like that was printed today? |
|
The admin would have that journalist fire. And even more scary is that the editor would do it.

13. And turning that corner, the peace movement here gelled because of |
|
what was happening on the ground in Vietnam that was reported on their TV but also tragedies that focused it- RFK's murder and Martin Luther King's, for example
so far, we don't have that unity of purpose
