Is 420 a factor of 1337?
If you don't know what this means, you're not very cool, so don't bother telling me that 1337/420 = 3.183 (exactly the value of pi, according to Leviticus). Rather, 420 is some ubiquitous pothead reference and 1337 is pronounced "leet", which is a code language invented by comic book dyslexics. (And now that you know these things, you can be "cool" again.)

What I'm asking is, do these two worlds collide? Are anime geeks stoners?

3. Don't know about 420, but 1337
means "leet" as in "elite". Today it's sort of a teenager gamer's speak but it originated from Unix hackers who originally used numbers to replace letters in their communication with each other.

Notably the term "w00t" which is a bastardization of "root" announcing that the hacker (haX0r) had gained root access to a Unix system.

Anyway that original concept has been bastardized and expanded on by kids mostly, used in online gaming, chat rooms, IM, etc...

1337 is sort of the marguee word, and is reponsible for why it's called leet speak. it can also be typed l33t.

Other related terms are "pwned" (owned), "teh" (the), r0x0rs (rocks), and hundreds of others I am unfamiliar with cause I am too old to keep up.

9. Wow, thanks for the great explanation......

420 is so much more fun!!

In return... 420 is the police term for a drug bust or the such... and people use it to refer to reefer. So, you might notice on say April 20th (4/20) there are celebrations ...usually with grateful dead music on the marquee. uh hum.

2. known a few in my time.
but usually a conversion process was in order for most to survive.

and when you say 1337 i usually think 'gamers' usually video gamers. when i think anime geek i think yaobikuniissachanSSevangelion, ii dayoo! 08) or something obnoxiously similar. used to like anime, but never liked it *that* much. though i must give it to CosPlay members for putting extra love and detail in their costumes. but i'd be stunned if more than 5% of them toked up.

12. The truth about 420
420 was a term created in the 60's in Northern California. A group of highschool kids who called themselves the Waldos would meet by the statue in town at 4:20 to smoke pot. They used the time as a secure reference to smoking infront of teachers and parents (i.e. "Mom, I am going for a 420 run"). The term got popular, and it just happened that the Grateful Dead were there and picked up on it. It spread life wildfire in the counterculture and now you have April 20th being the day to smoke pot.

15. Not according to Snopes.com
Surprisingly, the stupidest answer to what 420 means is the right answer. Snopes` answer to the 420 legends is that the time thing is the origin.
How dumb!
