US admits the war for ‘hearts and minds’ in Iraq is now lost

Pentagon report reveals catalogue of failure
By Neil Mackay, Investigations Editor

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE Pentagon has admitted that the war on terror and the invasion and occupation of Iraq have increased support for al-Qaeda, made ordinary Muslims hate the US and caused a global backlash against America because of the "self-serving hypocrisy" of George W Bush’s administration over the Middle East.

The mea culpa is contained in a shockingly frank "strategic communications" report, written this autumn by the Defence Science Board for Pentagon supremo Donald Rumsfeld.

On "the war of ideas or the struggle for hearts and minds", the report says, "American efforts have not only failed, they may also have achieved the opposite of what they intended".

4. This is not a loss in George W Bush's mind because he was...
...always after the oil and not the hearts and minds. That's also why they can look at 200,000 dead Iraqi old men, women and children as well as tens of thousands of Iraqi rebels killed with a completely indifferent attitude and just blow it off. BushCo has what it wanted, fourteen permanent military installations in the middle east, an unlimited supply of oil for their fighting machine and a strategic position to launch pre-emptive attacks on any declared enemy in that part of the world. The real battle as far as Bush has been concerned is winning the hearts and minds of the American people to launch aggressive wars of conquest around the world. George Bush is winning that battle I'm afraid.

5. Rummy said that!?!
Is he making a break with Bush? First public opposition to the Intelligence bill that Bush obviously wants pushed through and now this? Is Rummy jumping the sinking ship?

7. The war for the hearts and minds of Vietnamese was lost long ago
That didn't necessarily stop the war until several years after.
