Tenet Demands Complete Government Internet Control?????
Edited on Tue Dec-07-04 02:37 AM by AnIndependentTexan
Can this be confirmed and is this actually true? A new person posted this in 2004 Election Results and Discussion. The date was December 2, 2004. I haven't heard anything on this and I am not for sure what to believe about it. Are they really planning to go after the internet?

Tenet Demands Complete Government Internet Control
by Shaun Waterman
UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL
December 2, 2004

Former CIA Director George J. Tenet yesterday called for new security measures to guard against attacks on the United States that use the Internet, which he called "a potential Achilles' heel."

"I know that these actions will be controversial in this age when we still think the Internet is a free and open society with no control or accountability," he told an information-technology security conference in Washington, "but ultimately the Wild West must give way to governance and control."

The former CIA director said telecommunications -- and specifically the Internet -- are a back door through which terrorists and other enemies of the United States could attack the country, even though great strides have been made in securing the physical infrastructure.

The Internet "represents a potential Achilles' heel for our financial stability and physical security if the networks we are creating are not protected," Mr. Tenet said.

He said known adversaries, including "intelligence services, military organizations and non-state actors," are researching information attacks against the United States.

Within the federal government, the Department of Homeland Security has the lead role in protecting the Internet from terrorism. But the department's head of cyber-security recently quit amid reports that he had clashed with his superiors.

2. Exactly.. how?
I think the govt realized many years ago that the internet is an ungovernable entity. Hell they can't even collect taxes from people that sell online decently. I think that would be their first priority.

5. It would not be that hard.
Look at Eschelon, or however it is spelled.

I have not made an international phone call in my lifetime that was not run through that system. Or likely a local call either.

It would simply be a matter of ordering all ISPs to install whatever filtering/tracking software it wanted, and setting up some new or existing agency to monitor it all.

Or even simply taking control of all ISPs for 'national security' reasons.

I mean these people have shown that even the most outragous lies and actions can be sold to enough of the people that they get away with it.

Scary shit.

8. It would be a good idea
for us all to learn to communicate with a generator or battery powered short wave radio again...something tells me there may not be the juice to run the internet one of these days.

9. We could still do it the old fashioned way, BBS
We can always use fax modems to call directly to a Bulletin Board System. It costs more because you have to make toll calls instead of going through your local ISP.

11. Just combine this
with a couple other rumors: maybe they will make everyone who signs up to use the internet take psychotropic medications and live in slave labor camps. Spread the word!
