The Born Again Con Man.
He began touting his born again credentials as soon as it became apparent that in his past he was doing drugs, was an alcoholic and had knocked up teenage girls and paid for their abortions. In that life he went AWOL froma war he said he supported and may even have deserted. The Born again pose was to rescue his presidential bid and to eliminate any questions about his past.In that pose he and his handlers succeeded selling a used car to the American people.

Look at that something else this con man had done in his pre-Born Again life. He formed two companies, Arbusto and Harken OIl, using his family name as the magnets to attract investors in an oil well scheme. In a state ( Texas) gushing with oil he was probably the only one who could not strike oil.As his companies' fortunes dwindled, he had advance knowledge of what was brewing and bailed out leaving his shareholders holding the bag, in the same style as his mentor Ken Lay of Enron fame.

Now he has cooked up the Mother of All Lies ( The Muslim Terrorist Threat) with his two Sancho Panzas and they are out on a killing spree in Iraq.God knows how this is going to turn out, but you can bet on one thing: if things go south, you can be sure he will be born again in another guise, spouting another con game for a new band of suckers. How about the Emperor of Afghanistan? Does that sound like a job he can do?

1. The Afghanis are too smart to want him
But you are right in calling him a born again con man. I've seen my share of con artists in the religion game. They aren't in it for spiritual enlightenment but for money and power. Calling themselves "born again" doesn't make them Christians-I think one can tell another's spirituality by their actions, which speak louder than words.

4. converting SS revenues to his cronies Swiss bank accounts
...is the latest and greatest con job, biggest than Iran Contra, bigger than the S&L swindle his family and cronies carried out, bigger than the 911 ripoff of tens of billions, and bigger than the Iraq war ripoff of 200 billion.

5. Jim and Tammy Faye Baker
could play George and Laura. Paris Hilton and Nichole Richards could play the Bush twins.

6. I don't know
While I do think his particular brand of Christianity is very convenient for him, in that it absolves him of responsibility for a lot of what he does, I'm not sure its a pose. I think he really believes he's saved and largely believes that all the stuff he's doing is what God wants him to do.

9. My theory: he watched 5 minutes of "Elmer Gantry" (you don't really think
he even picked up Cliff Notes for the novel, did you?), got his gameplan, and made fiction nonfiction.

Elmer Gantry used the spectre of religion to continue his life of corruption and the people loved him all the more for it. Sort of P.T. Barnum with a Bible saying "There's a sucker born every day."

And c'mon. You can't argue that this charade hasn't worked, because it has. Up to a point. For those of us "on to" *, he doesn't care. He doesn't need us and he knows if we are disenfrachised, we can't stop him.

Our remedy: make our representatives and senators fight him every single day through speeches on the floors of their respective houses, opinion pieces in newspapers and magazines, press conferences. Let them tell the hoodwinked public that they have been played and we're going to make it right.

But we can't go along with any of this.
