Joe Lieberman: Is he desperate or what?
I've always said that if Lieberman got the nomination I would vote for him over Bush...and I probably would still do so. But I thought his performance tonight was appalling. Tom Curry, the MSNBC writer wrote on his performance that it's like Lieberman was "prepared to lose the nomination in order to prevent Dean from winning it." His comment about a Dean depression also gave the Bush campaign a great soundbite in a general election campaign (should Dean be the nominee) "Joe Lieberman, the 2000 Democratic Vice presidential candidate, said that Howard Dean's policies will lead to a depression..."

But of course this is good for Dean and he took the ball and ran with it refuting Joe. He will not back down. It is interesting though that Lieberman was so animated tonight in a debate against a fellow Democrat yet when he debated (is that word?) Dick Cheney in 2000 he was fairly passive. Which Lieberman would we get in a general electionn campaign against Bush? the fiesty Joe of tonight or the Joe who likes to preach "civility" in politics--especially when it concerns Republicans?

4. His days as a Senator may be numbered, too.
I hope he gets a strong primary challenge in 2006.

8. Along with his days as a Democrat.
My gut feel is that he will switch parties a few weeks before the election on the grounds that "the Democratic Party that I loved and grew up with has been hijacked by the left and that is bad for America."

And THAT will be w's October surprise.

13. Yep, if he does not get the nomination he will stomp out of the party
in a whining hissy fit.

Bank on it.

3. Agreed....
He felt like he had to take on the front-runner forcefully, and he missed. Lieberman will only embarass himself if he decides to fight through the early primaries. I predict he will drop out before North Carolina.

16. NC
North Carolina's primary isn't until May 4th, 40th in line. Lieberman will be long gone before then. My bet, he's gone after South Carolina, Feb. 3rd.

6. I thought.................
Lieberman was the wrong choice for Gore in 2000, and he's slipped even lower in my opinion since then. He can hold onto his Senate seat (although he's a rubber stamp for Bush most of the time) but he has NO business in a Democratic Presidential runoff. Go away Joe.

9. actually in my opinion he was super
he was the only one who debated all the points given him and made the points he came there to make AND he got two quality digs on Dean.

And I don't even like the guy.

So, is he desperate ? Going in, yes. Coming out, maybe not.

10. ABBOL
Anybody But Bush or Lieberman.

You think that was a "quality dig" on Dean to say that he would be a worse President than Bush by putting us into a Depression?

Now I know the Kerry people will jump in here and say "DEAN STARTED IT!" But he never accused a fellow Dem of becoming a worse president than Bush. In fact he says any Dem would be better.

So, uptohere if you think Lieberman's attack is good for anybody other than the Repukes, I think I know who you're cheering for.

11. Yeah, that definitely qualifies him.
> AND he got two quality digs on Dean.

Yeah, that definitely qualifies him.

But what it qualifies him for is a job as a Republican
spokesman, 'cause if Howard Dean is the eventual Democratic
candidate (as seems quite likely), you can bet we'll be
hearing a lot of re-runs of Joe's "dig" at Dr. Dean,
paid for by the RNC.

12. I'm not sure GOP talking points will mobilize primary voters.
If this were a general election, *maybe* (and this is a big maybe) that was good strategy. But in a **Democratic** primary, one doesn't want to sound like a Republican.

14. that comment
was really dirty---you can bet if howard dean wins the nomination, that hannity and limbaugh will constantly be playing that 'Dean depression' bit.
He struck below the belt with that.

17. "prepared to lose the nomination in order to prevent Dean from winning it"
My thoughts exactly.

Lieberman is NOT on our side of this thing. I'm sure he's a passably decent person, and a lot of Democrats like him, but he's not a Democrat.

Don't EVER forget his ruinous contribution to the Florida fight in 2000. He helped the Repubs every time he opened his mouth. And he still is.
