that has that responsibility!
Look at what they said in a press release on November 4th, 2002, titled:
Fact Sheet
PROTECTING VOTING RIGHTS AND
PREVENTING ELECTION FRAUD
http://www.usdoj.gov/opa/pr/2002/November/02_at_641.htm Since the Attorney General’s announcement on October 1st of the Voting Access and Integrity Initiative, the Criminal Division has opened sixteen cases regarding allegations of voting fraud, voter intimidation, and others. (I think most of those are regarding civilians, not election officials/gov)
Now look at this!
* The Justice Department will enforce the laws that prohibit:
Ø voter intimidation;
Ø voting by ineligible individuals;

Ø ballot boxes disappearing;
Also, look at this press release from 11/1/04:
http://www.usdoj.gov/opa/pr/2004/November/04_crt_730.htm2 Qs: 1) Where were they deployed to and what's with the focus on OK, which went to Bush 66%/34%?
2) Which jurisdictions are not covered by the Voting Rights Act and why?
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Department of Justice today announced plans to send election monitors to observe the November 2 election in three Oklahoma counties in and around the Cherokee nation, Cherokee, Delaware, and Adair counties.
On October 28, 2004, the Department announced its largest election monitoring effort ever, deploying approximately 1,100 federal monitors and observers to watch elections in 25 states around the country. The Department noted the possibility of adding additional jurisdictions prior to Election Day.
Since the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the Justice Department has regularly sent observers and monitors around the country to protect election-related civil rights. In addition, the Department has routinely deployed its own civil rights personnel to serve as civil rights monitors in jurisdictions not covered by the Voting Rights Act.
