Now that we have Homeland Security, should CIA be disbanded?
Edited on Fri Sep-05-03 08:37 AM by kentuck
Multi-millions are spent on these old sleuths every year and for the last couple of decades, at least since the fall of the Berlin Wall, they haven't predicted or prevented any major world event. They are nothing more than a waste of taxpayer money. It is a spy welfare program. Since we now have Homeland Security, do we still need to be spending this money on such an obsolete organization?

(added word "any")

1. Does the CIA even work for the US?
The CIA looks to be the private intelligence arm of the richest families in America, and they seem to be more interested in promoting the dictators that the corporations want than promoting democratic governments that American needs. A quick look at their history and it seems that's been the way it has been since the beginning back in the OSS (Oh, so social!) days.

Military intelligence does the heavy lifting anyway.

3. You fella's need an education...
The CIA maybe a troubled agency, but they are an integral part of our national security. Have you read any NIE or Brief they've prepared? Then how do you know they haven't prevented a war or defended this country?

C'mon Kentuck, you're better than this- the CIA is not the boogeyman.

4. I've been familiar with the CIA since my days in Viet Nam...
They are the boogeyman when megalomaniacs like Nixon and Bush start using them as their personal help...

6. It is true that the CIA reflects whatever Admin is in charge...

...and like any weapon, it is as dangerous to its wielder as it is to an enemy.

However to paint the CIA with such a broad brush is to marginalize the real sacrifice of the real Americans within its ranks- the Jedhberg teams of the 50's; Th pilots who flew suppiles into Tibet to support its resistance; the agents who acted as a clear channel between the US, Israel and the Palestinians during the Clinton presidency.

Just my two cents Kentuck. I've always enjoyed reading your posts and your views.

A Timeline of CIA Atrocities
by Steve Kangas

CIA operations follow the same recurring script. First, American business interests abroad are threatened by a popular or democratically elected leader. The people support their leader because he intends to conduct land reform, strengthen unions, redistribute wealth, nationalize foreign-owned industry, and regulate business to protect workers, consumers and the environment.

So, on behalf of American business, and often with their help, the CIA mobilizes the opposition. First it identifies right-wing groups within the country (usually the military), and offers them a deal: "We'll put you in power if you maintain a favorable business climate for us." The Agency then hires, trains and works with them to overthrow the existing government (usually a democracy). It uses every trick in the book: propaganda, stuffed ballot boxes, purchased elections, extortion, blackmail, sexual intrigue, false stories about opponents in the local media, infiltration and disruption of opposing political parties, kidnapping, beating, torture intimidation, economic sabotage, death squads and even assassination.

8. Thanks for you opinion...

I agree that the CIA, as an agency with limited oversight, has done some horrible things. But overall, I think they're important for the nation.

So I humbly disagree with your position.

Could be applied to any Intellgence Agency in the world... We should have a high standard for our Intel Organs, but we should be realistic about the dark reality of human nature.

7. It should be, but that is one of the things that got
JFK killed. He was going to abolish the CIA and the Federal Reserve and the power elite said this guy has got to go.

10. No
The information developed by an intelligence agency depends upon the mission of the organization to which it belongs. For example, the Defense Intelligence Agency is concerned with understanding potential military threats and our adversaries' structure and capacities to project force, while the Drug Enforcement Agency is interested in developing knowledge of drug markets and distribution.

The need for "spying" on activities in other nations goes beyond the need to identify groups plotting attacks against the US, or potential targets for our military activity. Our government also needs information on political, economic, and social circumstances in other countries in order to develop policy (granted the credibility of intelligence agencies in this area has been undermined by the Bush administration).

In as much as this creates redundancy, I think redundancy in this area is a good thing particularly if it creates competing points of view.

Because of the nature of negative evidence I think it is impossible to say if any "major event" has been disrupted or prevented as a result of the CIA since the cold war ended.

12. How would the Bush Family Dictate without the CIA?
Prescott Bush helped form it with Nazi spies and corporate criminals! G H W Bush ran it for years in public and in private! It has served them well!

The whole "Homeland Security" thing gives me the creeps. Too close to monikers like "Fatherland" and "Internal Security" for me.

Let's just rename it for what it really is: the GRU Amerika Office.

19. The CIA is and always has been a branch of the Bush Criminal Empire
Alan Dulles was Prescott Bush's lawyer when he was funding Uncle Adolf. Alan Dulles was the first director of the CIA. Poppy was involved from the mid 1950's, up to and including the Reagan administration. Jeb took his daddy's place as the offical CIA shit-stirrer in Florida (Miami Cubans) and his day job as governor provides the perfect cover for that, and the other family business, importing of certain "dry goods" from Colombia.

Osama Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein, Manuel Noriega, the Contras, and others were created by the CIA.

Now would somebody please explain to me what the FUCK they have ever done to make this country (or any other) safer??
