was from African-American college students in the late 1960s. They'd say "those dudes" instead of "those guys."

White kids first started saying "dude" from emulating African American Vernacular English. Lot's of other words too, like "cool."

I'm gay, I use dude more than anyone I know, does that mean I'm a homophobe?
Honestly, the better research route would be geographical. I suspect he'd find that outside of the Pacific Coast, dude is used almost never. Additionally, if he were to have gay research subjects, his findings would probably be different about the un-gay-ness of the word.
