O.K., Is It Time to Break off Relations with My Wingnut Vietnam Vet?
Well, there are two actually, a local one who has never voted but who says he gives "credit" to Shrub for the $2000/mo disability check he started getting a couple of years ago. This one I know personally, he kids around, and he doesn't vote, so it's not this one.

The other one is a long-distance, e-mail only interaction. He was on my ship the year before I was, so we never met. He is part of a group of former shipmates, the rest of whom I don't e-mail with, all wingnuts. He sends out wingnut crap to a group address including me.

When I first posted about this a couple of years ago, some DUers BACK THEN said to cut him off. We've had periods of detente. Some of the time he sends non-political stuff and pleasantries. We had a long period of time when I let him know EXACTLY that I wouldn't tolerate the wingnut crap, and he agreed to observe those bounds, and we went for several months like that. Once he started up again, I would also send him inflammatory articles and Bartcop cartoons back.

But after the election he sent a "prayer of thanks" for Shrub and against JK. And today he forwarded CRAP about "thanks for the" swiftbots. I already Replied, saying that if he ever sent me CRAP again I would be lodging a complaint with his internet provider.

I think it's time to jot this "relationship" off as one more casualty credited to Shrub.

2. How much is the relationship worth?
I would love to cut all the wingnuts out of my life, but then my circle of friends would be very small indeed. And I'd lose half my family.

3. I had to write off
a guy I served with in the Army because of this stuff. He's so far gone he thinks it's a great idea for the FBI to snoop on our library habits. During this election he turned very RW and we can no longer speak together in a civil manner.

4. No need to report him to anyone
Just use your email client to block his address.

5. Snip & Clip - he's wasting your time
I've decided I don't need any of this shit anymore from anyone, and if they have a problem with that, they can go and pound sand. I feel great and pounds lighter - and you will, too. :hi:

7. I had a similar friend from my time in the Marines
He contacted me after about fifteen years and at first we were the same as we were back in the 70s. Later on, he started making comments about Clinton and his "liberal" policies, especially about allowing religious freedom for everyone; and, in his words, "even for Satanists." To make a long story short, he had become a born again Christian and began sending me religious propaganda. Regarding the religious freedom for the Satanists, I asked him how many times he had to allow for this (he remained in the military). His answer was that he had not, but was angered over the fact that they were to be treated as equals. I told him that religious freedom is one of the fundamentals upon which America was founded. Here is where the disagreements began.

When bush was selected in 2000 he tried to convince me that this was in the best interest for the country, even if the vote count was incomplete. This prompted me to send him a message: "It is not who casts the votes, but rather who counts them." I did not attribute this statement to Stalin, but it infuriated him nonetheless.

He continued to send me right wing literature and Christian propaganda. At this point I told him "goodbye" and that I was sorry for him because he had become a bigot; something I cannot tolerate.

If you asked me... I would just cut him off, but that is just my opinion.

8. Well, Today Was D-Day. He Sent Two More E-mails Today
This time one about somebody going to the White House and asking for "President" KERRY. The other one he started with, "I guess you'll say the dog in this joke was a Liberal." I didn't read any further.

& the poster above is right about feeling relieved at cutting the crappers off. Since the election, I haven't listened to the cable yakkers at all, and it HAS been liberating.

Here's what this vet got:

***************************************************

O.K., Shipmate, It's Over

I thought about writing a fancy goodbye about how wingnuts do NOT own God, the flag, or this country and how DISGRACEFUL it is for veterans to parade themselves for the wingnut party.

But it would just go over your head. So let's keep it simple: I am deleting your e-addy from my computer and I -----DEMAND---------that you delete mine from yours.

Anything coming from you will be deleted without reading. And if you persist for awhile, I will send "X" (respected, non-political webring Vet) an e-mail and tell him. Maybe the embarrassment will stop you.

Just jot this down to one more casualty for your Idiot-in-Chief.
