The Rude Pundit mentioned this site in his column yesterday and I just took a look at it. It's a website that deals with (what else?) "Southern Heritage." No postcards of families having a picnic lunch at a lynching. But with all the confederate flags and the love for Nathan Bedford Forrest (a civil war general and the founder of the Klan) it's not hard to get the message.

I saw yesterday's thread in which DU northerners and southerners re-fought the Civil War, however,THIS IS NOT ANOTHER BASH THE SOUTH THREAD.

Rather, it's just one more clue that, starting with Ronald Reagan,and bringing things up to the present with our current fascist administration, our Red State congress who wants to make this into a Christian nation, and knuckle-dragging judges all too willing to go along, it looks like the rednecks finally did win the Civil War. And then spread their disease through the plains and mountain states.

I saw a bumper sticker once that had a confederate flag crossed out with the words "You lost ... Get over it!" printed on it. I liked the bumper sticker, but don't know if it would be fully safe to drive around with here.

What do you mean they control nothing but themselves? The South represents a very large chunk of electoral votes, and because the South votes more or less as a block, it has enormous power in any national election. Although the South lost the war, they seem to be getting the last laugh.

Just because you don't like them doesn't mean that its smart to discount their influence.

By the way, keep calling them "hicks" and then wonder why liberalism has such a hard time making gains in the South.

Dear Raskolik: Please leave the north/south thing alone. This is not about region, it is about freedom, anti-fascism, lunatic fucking congresspeople (from whatever region of the country), and how the hell we get back some semblance of a democracy.

I pointed out that given the South's very large influence in the political direction of this country, you could make an argument that the old South is actually winning in the long run.

my point is that they are not in control by alone. They need other states that seem to be tied together by religion. I wouldn't consider Florida as the south. The south is a mentality maybe the panhadle is the south but not most of the rest from when I've visited, and Florida is the electoral vote powerhouse. What I'm talking about is the middle of the country that always go repub. I'm in the south so I know why the repubs here voted the way they did. And I have heard the spill from the Sons of the Confederacy on why the war is still going on. Trust me it's over.

that in order for a Republican to have *any* shot at the Presidential nomination, he has to have very strong support in the South?

And because the South can and does determine the direction of the Republican party, and because the Republican party is (unfortunately) dominant right now in the U.S., the South has an influence over national politics far out of proportion to their population or economies.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those people that assumes the South (or any other rural area) is a homogeneous mass of conservative Republicans. The condescending attitude that some people on this site have for red states would make you forget the fact that California has Kindergarten Cop for a Governor, and Republicans made gains across the board this year, not just in rural areas.

Of course, I live in the Progressive Liberal Shangri-la of Chicago, so you probably won't understand my sophisticated big-city reasoning, being from the South and all.

A flurry of racist hate fliers found in Eugene neighborhoods has prompted denouncements by the city manager, the police chief and the Human Rights Commission.
The fliers, denigrating gays, Jews, immigrants and others, have appeared in at least three neighborhoods in the past week. The fliers are the product of "cowards and bullies" and are not welcome in Eugene, City Manager Dennis Taylor said in a written statement.

Some of the fliers are identical to those appearing on the Web site of a Portland-based white supremacist group called the Tualatin Valley Skins. The fliers were found in driveways wrapped in plastic bags that also contained gravel - a method of distribution recommended on the Web site.

City officials said the fliers may be part of a larger increase in hate activity. State law enforcement reported 21 incidents of alleged hate crimes in Eugene in the three-month period ending Sept. 30 - the highest number in recent memory, said Greg Rikhoff, the city's human rights manager.

The incidents included 13 involving possible bias crimes based on race, color or national origin, five based on sexual orientation, four based on religion and one based on political affiliation. Some incidents included more than one basis for discrimination

My daughter did a report for school on 'Hate Groups'. She did her research on-line. The stuff she found was shocking, sick and disgusting beyond belief. It was creepy just having this stuff 'coming into our house'. I was glad when she was finished, and I could wipe it from our computer history, if not from real life.

Phrase it however you want, but there's no denying the animosity that still exists between north and south.

Further, what I called in my original posting a southern disease, has its counterpart in the north. Although I now live in FL, I'm a northerner and I spent half my life hating the south over their resistance and violence toward the civil rights movement.

But I also understand that there are millions of enlightened southerners. Morris Dees at The Southern Poverty Law Center in Alabama has done at outstanding job of fighting bigotry, the Klan and other hate groups. If only there were more of him and less fugitives from "Deliverance." But this past election tells us that "Deliverance" is still in the lead.

Nonetheless, let's not turn this thread into another north/south mutual bashing society. That was not my intent in my original posting.

You will be shocked. Republican hate groups have been growing nationwide since the theft of the Whitehorse in 2000; the Klan is only a small portion of them.

Check out the CCC or Council of Conservative Citizens.

The National Alliance is also a dandy. They are from "heavenly Hillsboro WV" where the famous "monkey trials" that put a high school science teacher on trial for teaching evolution. They are the root of the creationism fiasco that is taking place today. Also, their founder Dr. Peirce, wrote a book called Turner Diaries which Timothy McVeigh read and then committed the Oklahoma City Bombing. He was trying to incite a race war.

Also, check out the "Christian Identity Church" You will sense their philosophy in many, if not all, republican preachers and commentaries. It is also embedded in many recent and current conservative bills.

If you generally survey them all and kind of get a handle on their philosophies, not only will you notice that they are all related, but they have strong ties to Conservative Christian Republican philosophy as expressed by individuals across this nation and by conservative reporters on TV.

The Christian Knights of the Ku Klux Klan have risen again along with many grandchildren.
