Poll question: God: Guy or Gal? |
|
Those who believe in some form of god, specifically along Christian lines: are we talking a male or female deity?
As to why I ask: curiosity about Christian DUer's views, and a touch of boredom. :P

22. it was a sincere question |
|
Can god embody sexuality without taking part in it? Christianity has him partaking with virgins, with a little help from The Holy Ghost. The original was even fuzzier: The word "God" here is Elohim. It says, "The LORD our Elohim is one LORD." This phrase is not normally grammatically correct—a plural noun with a singular verb, "is." Elohim is the plural of both El and Eloah. El and Eloah mean "mighty One," "strong One," or "powerful One" according to Brown, Driver, and Briggs. Elohim, being either of these two words in the plural, therefore means "strong Ones," "mighty Ones," or "powerful Ones."http://bibletools.org/index.cfm/fuseaction/Bible.show/sVerseID/5091/eVerseID/5091/

Interestingly, many of the people who claim God is asexual still refer to Her as Him. I can't tell you how much that pisses Her off.

A confused nine year old boy goes up to his mother and asks, "Is God male or female?" After thinking for a moment, his mother responds, "Well, God is both male and female." This confuses the little boy so he asks, "Is God black or white?" "Well, God is both black and white." This further confuses the boy so he asks, "Is God gay or straight?" At this the mother is getting concerned, but answers none the less, "Honey, God is both gay and straight." At this, the boy's face lights up with understanding and he triumphantly asks, "Is God Michael Jackson?"

25. From a former Christian: God has to be a male. |
|
If you believe the Bible, God created man in his own image. Ergo, God is a male. He later created the female because it finally dawned on him that he needed something better to do with his penis.
And since Jesus was the son on God through Mary, God had to be a male to supply the correct chromosomes.
Finally, since females are admonished in the Bible to defer to men, God has to be male. No female God would say that.

26. My thoughts on "created man in His image"... |
|
from what I've read, I conclude this to mean we were given something immortal, like God is immortal. Our soul. Animals weren't created in His image and have no eternal soul. Animals have a life force, which God created, but nothing that goes on forever.
Image, in this context, doesn't mean God was male because he created man. It doesn't mean God has a penis, eyes, nose, ears, etc. He may, but I seriously doubt it. God is neither male nor female, in the human sense. He is Spirit.
Of course, most use the pronoun "He" because of the Bible being written that way.

the bible refers to god as "the father". after all, the whole human status hierarchy revolves around that concept.

The phrase "God the father" just describes the relationship God has with humanity. "God the Mother" would work just as well. "God the parent" I guess. I call God him merely for reasons of convenience. I don't care if anyone calls God her. I know what they mean.

..but that was not what we were talking; we were talking about God and its sex, or the Buda, if you prefer. For Budhists there is not conflict between atheism and budhism. That is because eastern doesnt mix religion with politics, like western does
that separation is as important as the separation between church and the state, but here in western we are centuries behind that revolution

I refer to God alternately as He and She, both male and female. I believe God is actually passed anything we call "male" and "female."
The fact that God is referred to as "He" and "Him" in the Bible is no great dilema. Most languages when gender is unkown automatically use the masculine form.
The fact that God is called "God the Father" is, to me, a limitation of our language abilities, not a description of God's gender. Afterall, how well can you use a tool which is finite, languaage, to describe something infinite, God?
edit: spelling and grammar. :P

|
That was the whole point of the Genesis story. That in the relative world where desire is king there are opposites.
Also in the Bible there's the one parable where Jewish law says that a man has to marry his brothers widow and the pharisees question Jesus who would be her husband in heaven. He says something to the effect that there are not male and female in heaven. That people are like the angels, which I always took to mean sexless

people always attribute human characteristics to their gods..which makes little sense..unless your god is a human. People refer to the wrath of god..also a human characteristic..or the love of god..again! some say god is love..well ok...i will go with that one..that is somewhat understandable, but is god male or female? So silly!!!
