Doesn't it seem like a conflict of interest lamenting how we have fallen behind in science and yet he doesn't believe in global warming, which 99% of scientists are trying to warn us about and he probably doesn't believe in evolution. He doesn't believe that there is a finite amount of oil and he doesn't believe in alternative energy. Also, judging by his budget, he doesn't believe in math. So why does he want educated people? Dumbasses that don't know anything might come to conclusions like trees cause pollution and other great stuff that backs up his policies.

4. I often wondered why no one called him on such a contradiction

That said:

Bush doesn't want educated people. An educated populace is a boon to democracy and a danger to the goals of people like Bush.

It's not that Bush and his cronies believe in "fuzzy" science themselves, but it is imperative for them to convince people that science is "fuzzy"...otherwise they couldn't get away with the things they do. They plant the doubt. If science goes against profit, then the science must be bad.....so they spend millions explaining why science is "fuzzy."

This doesn't hold true for the right wing religious fanatics. Meaning - these people simply can't afford to buy into science without shattering their entire belief system. It is said a person will die before becoming the antithesis of themselves. Their very being is tied up in science being second to their religion and said science conforming to their religion. Which is telling when you consider another meaning of the word antithesis.

Because of their fanaticism, they are tools to be used. Bush and his ilk use the religious hard cases to promote their agenda. I don't for a minute buy Bush's religious convictions....that man has no convictions. Oh, I believe he "believes", but it's only a casual kind of believing and not a belief structure he's ever really given thought to... but he does use the right wing amen pew. He exploits them really. Not that I can work up pity for them.

They give people, especially republicans, wiggle room to hold fast to their cherished notions of how they want to world to be...as opposed to how the world actually is..

Then you have people who must believe America is: (fill in any ultra-patriotic notion of America's supreme greatness.) Anything at all that challenges these beliefs is met with deep resistance. Because if America isn't those things, then why did someone spend all those early years telling them it was....indoctrination runs deep. They go on to build a life around those beliefs...and now someone is telling them they are wrong? Scary stuff when you think about it.

Now combine both those things - Extreme "God and country" overload... and you get a powerfully motivating doctrine that sways people to go against their own interests and to viciously turn on others for daring to challenge them. You get people who refuse to see the truth because it requires them to examine their beliefs...and that might require them to change as people. And they are "quite comfortable being who they are, thank you very much, and don't need some stinking liberal to tell them different." A direct quote, BTW.
