ahem....Walmart has limited Salvation Army to weekends only
Target has refused to allow the bell ringers at its stores and Walmart has limited collections to weekends only.

http://www.abc6.com/article.php?ID=6506

I actually heard this mentioned on Fox News (I meant have caught their only mention of it) and was shocked that I hadn't heard of this and that they actually reported on -a little after 1PM today Fox News Weekend. Above is the only link that I could find on it.

Fox stated that WalMart had limited the Salvation Army to only 14 days of bell ringing.

2. Walmart
Walmart has had the Salvation Army at our local stores and Sam's Club 7 days a week here in Ohio. We were serenaded by a wonderful man singing at the entrance of Sams club. It was on a wednesday. I hope they do not stop the bell ringing, some people need the sound of the bell to wake them up and donate during the winter season. We donate all year to shelters and so forth, but some need a kick in the backside to get their head out of the sand. :)

Not when they support anti-gay policies.

6. And they paid $1M for the "privilege" after meetings with Rove in 2001

Discrimination, faith-based style

"On July 10, the Washington Post broke the story with a report about "the White House<'s> … 'firm commitment' to the Salvation Army to issue a regulation protecting such charities from state and city efforts to prevent discrimination against gays in hiring and domestic-benefits." In exchange, said the Post, the Salvation Army agreed to spend nearly $1 million on lobbyists and strategists to vigorously and publicly support the president's pet project."

edited to fix bad link

5. Is business so poor for Walmart
that they're actually concerned some handfuls of change may go to charity and not to them?

9. They want to give out charity money
not the people themselves to someone outside the store.

It helps with Wally World's PR.

18. What they're afraid of
Is that someone will notice that some of their employees are receiving holiday aid from the SA because they can't buy Christmas dinner or toys for the two-year-old on $5.15 an hour.

8. A few years back the SA wasn't in your face at the door...
They were off to the left or right and back away from the door of the stores. I don't when it changed but they let them about block the doorway anymore.

I really didn't have that much problem when they were off to the side,I gave them change several times, but this "In your face" style of collecting doesn't get it with me. Target banned them completely this year and they got my business for sure.

10. Oh, no!
How will the Salvation Army get enough money to buy lobbyists to help them continue their discriminatory charity?

13. How are they discriminatory?
Their doctrine rejects homosexuality. They do not, however, deny services to any person based on their sexual orientation.

16. They discriminate in hiring based on religion
I'll edit if I find the link. I know the discrimination victim I'm thinking of was Pagan.

19. At the risk of sounding crass...
Edited on Tue Dec-14-04 10:41 PM by theshadow
.... that's life! I was fired by a Concordia University campus where I was a part time instructor for 6 years because I'm not Lutheran. They made a mistake hiring me in the first place, and when they found out.... I was gone. It's their prerogative as a religious-based organization. I thought I had a lawsuit, but it's legal. The Salvation Army isn't any different.

24. Here's the info I was thinking of
This is a complaint from employees who were asked to revel thier denomination and permit thier clergypersons to share private information by the SA.
http://www.nyclu.org/salvation_army_complaint_022404.html

This is good general informaion on why orgs that ged federal FBO money aren't allowed to discriminate.
http://writ.news.findlaw.com/hamilton/20010802.html

This references Dodge v. Salvation Army, the case I was thinking of.

20. They sought to break a federal law
For the right to treat people as less than fully human. (read the post above about their bribes to the office of faith based initiatives). Is that discrimination in your book?

23. they probably had more complaints
from customers than compliments - some people find Christmas shopping a hideous enough chore without hearing the same god-awful dirge like carols over and over again acompanied by a guilt trip to give money to a charity they don't support.
