DU Memes: Certain items of conventional wisdom replicate |
|
whether true or not. I find it fascinating. Once those memes become embedded in the DU culture, it's difficult to refute them. People are so invested that arguments which contradict said meme, are usually rejected no matter how logical or well articulated. If you think you know of a meme, please list/describe it. I'll start with the one I've been up against this morning:
Joe Lieberman is a republican in all but name.

I think we are bit more retrenched in our own positions right now because we are all pissed off and hurt about how the election went down. Bryant Check it out --> http://politicalcomment.blogspot.com

2. But some memes (ours) are good. Here's one |
|
* and the Repugs in power are responsible for the BIRTH TAX.
Because of their irresponsible economic policies, every American baby comes into the world with a $75,000 tax burden on its tiny shoulders.
footnote: a MN DUer coined this meme. I heard it and used it in a LTTE in the Strib and it was picked up. Our state coordinator for the 51 CapitalMarch used it in his speech Sunday...keep it going!

6. political spectrum memes |
|
are you a moderate? a lefty?
these labels are great for lazy thinkers ... but too often, they lack definition ...
if you criticize the Democratic Party for not standing up to the republicans, does this make you a lefty? fighting against the republican party, and not just "going along", is not a spectrum issue ... it should be embraced by all democrats across the political spectrum ...
how about balanced budgets? is the conventional view that "liberals" want to spend the country into oblivion and that "moderates" are more fiscally responsible? it's nonsense ... if you continue to spend way beyond what we can afford, you will destroy the country ...
conspiracy theories like mihop or lihop? is it not possible to consider yourself a moderate and believe that bush and the neo-cons are totally evil and corrupt? to be a lefty, do you have to believe that Al Qaeda didn't plan and implement 9/11 all on their own to retaliate for U.S. interference in the Middle East?
are you a "moderate" or a "progressive" if you believe that the Constitution clearly calls for a separation of church and state?
and what about the war in Iraq? where does it place you on the political spectrum if you look at the realities in Iraq and see that bush's policies have failed there?
far too much bandwidth is spent on DU debating the left versus center nonsense ... it leads us nowhere ... we have important work to do if we ever want to regain our majority party status; endlessly arguing the left-right meme is divisive and will not get the job done ...
