—Retiring next year (i.e., born in 1940): $14,900 a year under existing Soc. Security; $13,900 under privatization.

—Retiring in ten years (born in 1950): $15,200 a year under existing Soc. Security; $13,000 a year under privatization.

5. SS benefits will be relentlessly eroded.
Medicare contributions will increase while the benefits decrease. Cost of living adjustments will decline. Federal sales taxes will be introduced to double tax existing savings.

6. They are giving 2.7 percent increase for 2005, that don't cover
any the increase we are seeing. I feel for the old, they will need our help.

9. The "sales tax" will be a double taxation.
Retired people have savings from their taxed income when earning. With the introduction of a Federal sales tax this already taxed income when earned will be taxed again when spent.

Isn't that better than nothing? Isn't that better than letting the system collapse? After all the system is due to collapse. Except that it isn't about to collapse. The Nation had a good review of this issue, and Krugman had a great column on it as well.
