can non-profits take political stands
what exactly is the distinction between an "educational" group and an "advocacy" group

there's a right wing fundie group here in California--Campaign for Children and Families--that does take stands on bills before the State Legislature

1. non-profits can not take political stand
Education group is to inform the public.

Advocacy group - you can not call it lobbying, but it is, they education the legislators of the issue. Can not buy them things just pass out information.

2. Are they a 501 (C) 3?
A lot depends on how they are incorporated. You can go here and learn more on the subject:

5. Non-For-Profits
I may be wrong. My understanding, though, is that they CAN NOT endorse candidates, but they can take stands on issues, and do issue ads without endorsing a candidate for public office.

Anyone know if this is correct?
