Christianity, Atheistic Humanism & Black Metal Music

I was noodling around the tolerance.org site and I came upon the section on hate music. It is interesting to me because on this board it can seem to be so much Christian vs. Atheist Humanists and vice-versa and then you read what these people think and it seems to put the Christians and Atheist Humanists on the same side. In their own words the NSBM are "opposed to all social forces including Semetic Christianity, Judaism, humanism and liberalism."

I hate it that they are calling Paganism their own and making it so hateful. It's kind of like what the Christian right has done to Christianity - only worse. While I would like to connect with my Scandinavian roots - I have no connection with these people. (And I'm sure they want it that way).

"National Socialism," explained one NSBM performer in an interview published in the 1998 book Lords of Chaos, "is the most perfect synthesis of the Luciferian will-to-power, and neo-heathen principles & symbolism."

NSBM began in Scandinavia in the early 1990s in a birth of fire -- literally. Over 100 churches were set afire in Norway and nearby countries in an arson campaign against Christianity; evidence for many fires pointed to the "Black Circle" of black metal principals. One of them, Burzum band leader Varg Vikernes, was convicted of arson and also of murdering his musical mentor. In prison, his politics moved from anti-social and anti-Christian satanism to explicit national socialism.

The extremes of musical passion attract fascist ideologies in a time when a Judeo-Christian moral values have caused humanity to poison the earth and sky and waters, destroy ancient cultures and adulterate their races, enslave many to the tedium of a society motivated by commerce, and remove all desire for individuality in existence. National Socialist black metal (NSBM) is aurally hateful music that diminishes the listener and saturates them with isolationist and ancient mystical beliefs, separating the tribes so we may have our peoples remain unique and unmarketable.

Unlike most White Power music, NSBM did not originate in the White Power/White Nationalist community, but was created by outsiders who suddenly found National Socialist and Pagan ideals to be empowering and relevant. Musically it is the closest metal genre to punk hardcore that exists, borrowing from the crustcore and Satanic heavy metal traditions to formulate something opposed to all social forces including Semetic Christianity, Judaism, humanism and liberalism.

Hated by the people who don't like hate groups or hate crimes, NSBM remains an outsider form of both black metal and white power music that is not fully accepted by either parent group, but is recognized by many as the only source of extremity powerful enough to fuel sonic hatred as is required for black metal. 5. Only a tiny percentage of black metal is affiliated with Nazism

There's a Polish "scene," led by bands such as Graveland, that's overtly neo-Nazi. And then there's Varg Vikernes of the band Burzum, who's embraced white supremacy while serving a long prison sentence for murder. Among the most prominent few dozen black metal bands, that's all I can think of who are willing to be associated with any sort of racist political movement.

Nonetheless, that hasn't stopped the accusations. For a while, some of the bigger Norwegian bands had to specifically deny any connections to neo-Nazism in their liner notes.

Caveat: I don't know what's gone on in the black metal scene in the last 2-3 years.

IMHO, of course. I've only even heard of 6-7 bands on that list.

If you're interested in the more pleasant side of folk-oriented Scandinavian metal, I'd recommend these albums:

Storm, Nordavind (a side project of black metal mega-bands Darkthrone and Satyricon)
Ulver, Kveldsjanger (their other albums are more traditional black metal or, more recently, some kind of electronic style)
Otyg, Älvefärd
Otyg, Sagovindars Boning

I've lost track of the newer black metal and black-metal-influenced acts, but it seems like there's a growing sub-genre of folk-influenced music coming out of Norway and Sweden.

I like to think of myself as tolerant, but I do wish the mothership would come down and take these whackball hate groups away.
