Canadians - I'm coming - can you give me some insights
Don't want to be too many miles from the US border - closest miles from Ohio. Partner will have a jewelry/watch store and he is a watchmaker. Any idea on what would be an ideal place to move too? Where the jewelry store might do well in town - but perhaps we could buy a nice old house on a few acres??

Thanks.

4. When Progressives move to Canada
Their getting in cheap before global warming makes the rest of us move up there.

8. It has to be phased in anyway
There is a cut off - 250,000 a year total - I think the US gets a maximum of 10% of that so if tens of millions are coming, it's going to take awhile (there weren't enough life boats on the titanic either).

16. I just wish
that "progressives" would want to stay here and fight alongside the rest of us to get control of this vessel rather than jumping ship like this.

19. As if living a few miles north of the border prevents you from ....
participating in American democracy.

Puhhleeze

Everything you can do to fight Bush from America you can do from Canada. The only difference is that while living in Canada you get free health care, cheaper prescription drugs, better schools, a more educated and informed populace, and NO faux news.

2. Toronto leaps to mind, but be warned, it's expensive.
And there are many established, middle-sized communities in southern Ontario with nice old houses (and affordable, too). Hamilton area (especially Dundas and Ancaster), Simcoe, Guelph, Kitchener-Waterloo come to mind.

17. It was pretty mild here until the last couple of weeks.
Yesterday was the first really bitterly cold day, about -10 c.

We've had just one snowfall, and it was gone by the next day. Which sucks. If it has to be cold, I want snow.

6. How's Vancouver?
I know someone who moved there recently--he's a composer in the film industry. How are living expenses up there as compared to, say, Los Angeles?

7. Hmmm....
I'm in Toronto - lot's of demand for jewelry here, especially expensive stuff, but unless you have a Haliburton contract a few acres would be hard to come by. Anyway, keep my email ( email@justinbeach.com ) in case there are any questions I can answer.

These may help too.

Yea, I'm just getting into checking houses now - checked so many towns I can't remember what's what - properties I printed gave to partner. But I know some towns I clicked on house with acreage and got 0 results. Doesn't have to be alot, just no neighbors close by. Would like more of a country setting.

Thanks very much for your help.

P.S. - yes, it's higher end, very nice jewelry.

9. Windsor, London and Niagara....
...come to mind as well. Of course there are Fredericton, Halifax, Charlottetown etc... if you want to stay in the maritimes.

If you head west, I have some friends in Surrey/Vancouver area that I could put you in touch with.

I'd say come up here, but it's damn cold and there isn't much call for a watchmaker in my little hick town.

12. Thanks
I'm going to check some of that out. Its weird moving to a place I've never even visited, although my parents have and say it is very beautiful.

If you buy a house - I suppose they'd have to let you in eh?

It's right across the border, so you could sell to both American tourists as well as Canadians.

Warm area, and you look north to see Detroit.

Lots of old houses, historic ones, and plenty of land.

Very liberal province too.

Oops forgot...population about 500,000 if you count the outlying areas, and it has a university.

Here's an url that may help you.
