Going to Canada might not be the best idea.
(I don't know if this is the right place. If not please move the thread)

In the thread "Canada won't fund missile shield (but will take Americans avoiding Iraq)" (LBN) everybody has been cheering.

My fear: Canada might accept conscientious objectors - but not terrorists. Under PATRIOT II anybody, everybody can be declared a terrorist.

When Bush was in Canada I read something in one of the links posted here that US authorities can now arrest people in Canada. I cannot find that thread any more, googled and came up with something. You can read it here:

Maybe I'm being hysterical. But I'd rather err on the side of suspicion.

1. Canada
If they can arrest you in Canada, then they can do it a heck of a lot easier here in the u.s.

Still would have more freedoms in Canada. They seem more liberal to me every day. Of course, more liberal than the u.s. is saying very little.

2. I don't understand
How can the U.S. make arrests in another sovereign country? Wouldn't Canadian officials have to make an arrest, and have their own sort of (un-)PATRIOT act as a basis for those arrests?

3. Are you in Europe? If so, will Europe welcome Americans

who want to leave the U.S.? I know that "old Europe" has some problem accomodating the increasing numbers of immigrants from Africa, "new Europe" (if that includes Albania, the former Yugoslavia, etc.)

4. Hello??? The CIA has been in Canada for about 50+ years
Edited on Thu Dec-16-04 05:15 AM by nine23
We've been on top of this shit for most of our lives..

All the CIA has ever found in Canada is SUCCESS...a peaceful, democratic society that leaves them flumoxed..."THEY HATE US FOR OUR FREEDOM."

I love saying that, cuz' it's true...

5. Not possible? Well, what I found says it's possible to have you
could arrested there now.

I really think this deserves lookig into. Many people here fear that a draft is coming, a number of them have said they would move to Canada then. What I have found suggests going to Canada wouldn't help anyone and it would be better to choose other countries. It's not me that would get drafted. I'd just have a bad conscience if I didn't tell you about it. And then, yes - maybe there is nothing to it. But I fear there is.

As to getting political asylum in Europe - I'm afraid that is not possible yet. Europe has a list of countries that are known to suppress their population. The US - erm - is NOT (yet) known to suppress its population.

But considering the fact that the US are our cherished friend and ally it is much easier for an American to get into Europe than for somebody from a Third World country.

6. Going to Ottawa for Winterlude..
Gonna check it out. I know it's cold. The problem with the USA is there are to many people and opportunity is being replaced with poverty. I really feel Canada will offer more freedom, a superior culture, better health care and a more affluent lifestyle for my family. That's a hard combination to beat

7. Canada likes to import people.
Each year around a quarter a million people immigrate to Canada. (http://members.allstream.net/~agsheikh/immigration.html)
Why not make it your home?
They are particularly looking for families willing to move to small cities and villages.
The benefits of immigration for Canadians is that they get in people who pay taxes almost straight away and contribute toward everybody else's pensions. Smart approach to rising pension costs, not like Europe where they won't be able to handle babyboomers retiring.
They also get people that are already born and educated, therefore these people cost less in education and health care.
It's cold but then again so is Norway and it comes out top in the UN's list of best nations to live in, just in front of Canada, Sweden and Australia.
Now Australia is a good option but a bit strict on immigration.

8. Has any one read up on the link I posted above?
I'm not saying Canada isn't a beautiful country. I'm saying it might not turn out to be as safe for US-citizens as we always thought.

I don't quite get it: If I were an American under the Bushistas and read something like that I'd certainly check it out.
