Conservatives: "'Moderate' Muslims must take responsibility"
Edited on Fri Dec-17-04 01:51 PM by ck4829
I often read what Extremist Muslims are doing around the world. DU seems to be the only place on the Internet where I can find views and opinions of this that are actually quite fair and balanced.

As you may know I am a Convert to what I call Universalistic Islam, and I am also a Liberal. I am proud to be both.

I have also often read the views of the Free Congress Foundation and WorldNutDaily. I was hurt by what I read, before I was a Muslim, I had several Muslim friends, and they were some of the nicest people I had the pleasure of meeting.

The thing that has stuck with me the most is something Paul Weyrich has said and that was "Moderate Muslims must stand up and take responsibility if they want to prove Islam is a religion of peace." (paraphrase)

I do not believe Islam is a religion of peace in the same sense as what Bush called it. Islam is everything from what Osama bin Laden believes in, and all the way to what Irshad Manji (who I admire very much, and I believe she is closer to what a Muslim should be than Osama) believes in.

I spend time sometimes trying to apologize for what worshippers of Osama bin Laden do, and now I have realized that I owe absolutely nothing to Paul Weyrich and his cohorts.

I now think the best way to oppose Al Qaeda and their terrorist friends is to oppose the people who armed them in the Afghan-Soviet war, these people who need to be opposed are also profitting from Al Qaeda's war on America.

Maybe it is the Republican Party and all the Conservatives like Paul Weyrich, Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, etc. who should stand up and take responsibility if they want to prove they are trying to help America.

1. It's a lot like saying
Edited on Fri Dec-17-04 01:50 PM by bryant69
"Italians need to stand up and put an end to the Mafia. Japanese need to stand up and put an end to the Yakuza. Chinese people need to stand up and put an end to the Triads and the Tongs.

And if they can't do that it proves that they are really on the sides of those criminal enterprises and they will all go to jail.
"

It's a BS argument who's sole purpose is to make it ok to discriminate against Muslims.

4. That actually didn't need saying
The Italian government never supported the Mafia, the Japanese government doesn't deliberately finance the Yakuza and China certainly offers no support to the Triads. The problem in Islam is not the people, it's the ideology. I know many good people who happen to be Muslim but they certainly wouldn't measure up as being good Muslims. Until they repudiate a moral code that calls for "a war on all mankind" as the Koran puts it, Muslims will continue to face hostility.

6. Muslims will continue to face hostility....
As long as there are racist xenophobes in the world.

I didn't know there were rednecks in Toronto; I thought they were all "Trailer Park Boys".

7. Please cite this verse in the Koran
Then I will find some equally damning verses in the Bible to take out of context and use it to prove why Jews and Christians "continue to face hostility."

2. The whole trouble with that statement
Is that with his crusade against Muslims, in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere, Bush is making every single moderate into an extremist simply as a matter of self defense. Iraq is the best example, a moderate, secular state, where, despite all of the rhetoric, the average person's lifestyle was pretty high, women weren't muzzled or swathed in clothing, and oddly enough, a gun was in virtually house. Now that we have invaded and are occupying and looting that country, it has become the central HQ for terrorists and extremeists of all stripes. Sunnis and Shi-ites have put aside their age old hatred in order to battle the common enemy. A state that once refused Al-Qaeda either access or a home is now welcoming them with open arms.

Yes, Bush is a uniter, uniting everyone in the world against us.

3. Yeah, coming from conservatives, the statement rings false.
The right wing is to America what extremists are to muslim areas: perversions that have wrongly taken center stage and should be put back on the margins.

The conservatives are the flip side of the same coin, but somewhere they heard someone saying how these societies should take back their leadership and thought it sounded good, not realizing it was also about them.

Time for the normal people to band together and defeat the nutbags. We'll help them get rid of theirs if they help us get rid of ours.

8. You owe no apolgies to anybody.
I know quite a few good Christians & don't hold them responsible for these guys:

But I do wish they would become aware of them. The Muslim nutcases get all the publicity.
