does anyone recall the date of that Bush photo-op with the fake workers

I remember there was an event where GOP aides were asked to come dressed like construction workers, waitresses, etc., to impersonate an audience of "regular working folks" -- only I forget when and where it took place. Anybody remember? I seem to recall it was before the "Made in China, oops, USA" boxes incident.

Also, somebody posted a letter from a witness at the Jefferson Memorial visit back on July 2, 2001, saying that the "tourists" Dubya met had actually been bussed in just a few minutes before, after security had cleared the actual visitors out of there ... anyone still have a link to this?

I'm busy compiling a timeline of blatant staged photo-ops by this administration (yeah, and I need to buy another package of printer paper just to keep up!).

1. The Made in China snafu
happened around Jan 22 this year:

Don't forget to add the stage-managed downing of Saddam's statue and the photoshopped creation of the massive crowds of celebrating Iraqis to your collection.

(I've got to leave for a while, I'll try to locate links to the crowd photos when I get back)

4. Found the doctored crowd pic
But alas, my memory is faulty, it wasn't a BFEE production:

Great idea, Lisa. Do you have a photo of the Fla. "voters protest" in Nov. 2000 that turned out to be GOP workers?

6. I found what you are looking for, Lisa
It was a stunt by the National Association of Manufacturers

From the Top Ten Idiots list from March 19, 2001:

"The theme involves working Americans. Visually, this will involve a sea of hard hats, which our construction and contractor and building groups are working very hard to provide. But the Speaker's office was very clear in saying that they do not need people in suits. If people want to participate - AND WE DO NEED BODIES - they must be DRESSED DOWN, appear to be REAL WORKER types, etc. We plan to have hard hats for people to wear. Other groups are providing waiters/waitresses, and other types of workers."

7. Google "staged Bush events" 69,000 hits Great topic Lisa!
WASHINGTON, May 15 — George W. Bush's "Top Gun" landing on the deck of the carrier Abraham Lincoln will be remembered as one of the most audacious moments of presidential theater in American history. But it was only the latest example of how the Bush administration, going far beyond the foundations in stagecraft set by the Reagan White House, is using the powers of television and technology to promote a presidency like never before.

Officials of past Democratic and Republican administrations marvel at how the White House does not seem to miss an opportunity to showcase Mr. Bush in dramatic and perfectly lighted settings. It is all by design: the White House has stocked its communications operation with people from network television who have expertise in lighting, camera angles and the importance of backdrops.

On Tuesday, at a speech promoting his economic plan in Indianapolis, White House aides went so far as to ask people in the crowd behind Mr. Bush to take off their ties, WISH-TV in Indianapolis reported, so they would look more like the ordinary folk the president said would benefit from his tax cut.

8. 68,997 sites left to check out!
April 9th: One of the "most memorable images of the war" is created when U.S. troops pull down the statue of Saddam Hussein in Fardus Square. Oddly enough... a photograph is taken of a man who bears an uncanny resemblance to one of Chalabi's militia members... he is near Fardus Square to greet the Marines. How many members of the pro-American Free Iraqi Forces were in and around Fardus Square as the statue of Saddam came tumbling down?

The up close action video of the statue being destroyed is broadcast around the world as proof of a massive uprising. Still photos grabbed off of Reuters show a long-shot view of Fardus Square... it's empty save for the U.S. Marines, the International Press, and a small handful of Iraqis. There are no more than 200 people in the square at best. The Marines have the square sealed off and guarded by tanks. A U.S. mechanized vehicle is used to pull the statue of Saddam from it's base. The entire event is being hailed as an equivalent of the Berlin Wall falling... but even a quick glance of the long-shot photo shows something more akin to a carefully constructed media event tailored for the television cameras.

Bush Hears No Dissent at Staged Economic Forum
Just a half-hour away from where he is enjoying a month-long ranch vacation on his Texas estate, President Bush held a staged political cheerleading session for the economy that included no dissent or criticism of his economic policies.
During the four sessions he attended for 20 minutes each, Bush was treated to campaign donors, CEOs, and other boosters repeating the administration's rhetoric and talking up the economy. Instead of offering new ideas, they only praised Bush for the stagnant economic policies he has offered up so far.
Even Republicans and conservatives dismissed the conference as a staged political event.
http://www.democrats.org/news/200208150001.html

For a speech that Mr. Bush delivered last summer at Mount Rushmore, the White House positioned the best platform for television crews off to one side, not head on as other White Houses have done, so that the cameras caught Mr. Bush in profile, his face perfectly aligned with the four presidents carved in stone.

And on Monday, for remarks the president made promoting his tax cut plan near Albuquerque, the White House unfurled a backdrop that proclaimed its message of the day, "Helping Small Business," over and over. The type was too small to be read by most in the audience, but just the right size for television viewers at home.

The most elaborate - and criticized - White House event so far was Mr. Bush's speech aboard the Abraham Lincoln announcing the end of major combat in Iraq. White House officials say that a variety of people, including the president, came up with the idea, and that Mr. Sforza embedded himself on the carrier to make preparations days before Mr. Bush's landing in a flight suit and his early evening speech.

Media strategists noted afterward that Mr. Sforza and his aides had choreographed every aspect of the event, even down to the members of the Lincoln crew arrayed in coordinated shirt colors over Mr. Bush's right shoulder and the "Mission Accomplished" banner placed to perfectly capture the president and the celebratory two words in a single shot. The speech was specifically timed for what image makers call "magic hour light," which cast a golden glow on Mr. Bush.
"If you looked at the TV picture, you saw there was flattering light on his left cheek and slight shadowing on his right," Mr. King said. "It looked great."

VIPs asked to remove ties during Bush speech in Indianapolis

TV station airs video of rep with tie on, then off, then on again

INDIANAPOLIS -- White House staffers reportedly asked men sitting behind President Bush during a speech in Indianapolis to remove their ties to enhance the message's grass-roots appeal.

"These are VIPs, right? Ordinary people aren't up on stage behind the president of the United States when he's speaking," said Bill Blomquist, a political science professor at IU-Purdue University at Indianapolis.

"But the trick is to make VIPs look like they're ordinary people," he added.

Bush's speech Tuesday in Indianapolis was part of a three-state swing timed to pressure moderate Republicans and Democrats in the Senate to back a tax-relief package larger than the $350 billion bill that eventually passed Thursday night.
