Being a True Blue Consumer
As I write these words, it is exactly one week until Christmas day. As a citizen of the Corporate States of America, I urge you to vote with your wallet and move your dollars closer to where your heart is.

You must treat every purchase like a vote, because in the Corporate States of American, the vote you cast from your pocketbook which, unlike the vote you cast on a Diebold voting machine, always gets counted.

Here is a very concise list of Red and Blue companies that supply us with the things we buy as gifts and use everyday.

1. Now that it's
a week before Christmas, the serious procrastinators like myself will have to start thinking about getting to the stores (not for a couple of days though). This list will determine what I get (which won't be much, sorry everybody) and my shopping habits will now have a purpose, and that is to buy blue whenever possible. Let's make the pug supporting companies squeal like the greedy pigs they are.

2. in the "Blue" list are some companies we have supported for
years JUST BECAUSE WE LIKE THEM!! Who knew?

And on the "Red" list are companies we have avoided because we JUST DON"T LIKE THEM

sometimes you just get caught in a place that gives you no choice and that is unfortunate.

but I have boycotted Domino's for probably 20 years, ever since I found out how much $$ their CEO was putting into anti choice legislation

I hate to see Target on the Red list, because they DO put a lot back into the community ..they work hand in hand with our church every year for the back to school clothing drive that we do, along with Payless.

Same with Home Depot, because they are such a strong supporter of Habitat, which I can't think about without Jimmy Carter popping into my mind, the epitome of how a former president should conduct himself.

My husband swears by Pep Boys

I try to not support any Big Tobacco, but those corporations are so deeply conglomerated that it is very hard to distinguish at times.

I will however, check out TJMAXX, and Ross more closely for my shopping needs.

just random thoughts on a lazy Saturday morning

Thanks for the list

3. Pass the list along to others
Edited on Sat Dec-18-04 03:29 PM by jesusq
To tell you the truth, the empty light on my car came on the other day and the only nearby station was a Sunoco, so I bought $5 worth and filled up at a Citgo. I agree that Target is less evil than Wal-Mart and shopping at a Publix store, which has union employees, is better than shopping at a non-union Winn Dixie. Sometimes the vote you make with your pocketbook are like the choice you make at the polls; the lesser of two evils.

Make a conscience decision everyday to make a difference with every little thing you do. Millions of people sacrificing a few bucks worth of savings or convenience here and there, can have at least as much effect as a band of committed revolutionaries willing to sacrifice everything.

Jesus loves you

4. I shop at Central Market 90% of the time, rather than the bigger
chains ..for a variety of reasons..
but I also feel that they treat their employees well (I have never seen such all around happy employees and COURTEOUS in a grocery store anywhere), and pay them better than other places.

I don't know if they are union or not, CM is a division of HEB.

HEB did donate to some Republicans over the last 12 years, but not **,
not DeLay, and not #41

HEB also donated to quite a few Democrats, including the legendary Henry Gonzalez of San Antonio (HEB's home town), and several other Dem candidates for Congress and Senate in Texas.
The only presidential candidate that I found on their donation list was Lamar Alexander, when he was in the primaries the last time he ran for the nomination.

CM tries to buy local produce where ever they can, from Texas if they can and you always know where it is from, even if it changes from week to week.

I used to shop at WalMart a lot, now I find myself going there less and less frequently.

I was telling my husband today about the Costco info and he asked if he could be a member too. This shocked me because he generally doesn't want to shop anywhere that requires a member ship card..just a quirk of his. So when he comes home, he is getting a card.

enough rambling. I intend to share the list

5. Publix is Unionized?
Where? I didn't realize that. When i worked there way, way, way, back in the 80's, they were rabidly anti-union. Things have changed?

9. Concerning some of those grey areas.
Maybe it would be a good use for the Demopedia, if we could compile yearly information regarding which stores would be in our best interests to frequent and which ones we should boycott. I doubt that all of the cases are going to be black and white, so it would be good for DUers to have a resource on which to base these decisions.

11. If you want the comprehensive list ...
I tried to cherry pick so everyday consumer-type companies as examples, but you can use these resources, but remember that smart companies with deep pockets play both sides of the aisle, so you have to look at amounts and percentages to each party and make a subjective call.

12. I contend that it would be even more complicated then that.
There are other factors to consider as well. Employee compensation packages, community donations, corporate responsibility, percentage of domestic production, and management philosophy should all probably be considered.

6. other companies not listed
very useful list.

Some places I shop at are not listed. How do I find out about them? Does the FEC have that available to the public, or does the contributions database need to be purchased?

Thanks!

7. Interesting.
Heinz is in the red column, and Overstock.com--which was exclusively selling one of those terrible anti-Fahrenheit 9/11 movies--was in the blue column. This would be worth examining further, but thanks for the informative post.
