Ga. Town Proud of WWII Christmas Legacy
BRUNSWICK, Ga. - With the Battle of the Bulge raging in western Europe during World War II, workers at a Brunswick shipyard were determined to deliver one more ship by year's end. To get the job done, laborers were needed around the clock on Christmas Day. About 1,500 volunteered — and they worked for free.

Newspapers across the United States carried the story in their afternoon editions Dec. 25, and 60 years later, their hard work and generosity remains a point of pride in the coastal city.

"We were Santa Claus," recalled 81-year-old Nanelle Surrency Bacon.

The shipyard built freighters to carry troops and supplies to the front lines of World War II.

It made its December quota before the holiday, launching its sixth ship Dec. 23, 1944. But Bacon and her co-workers at the J.A. Jones Construction Co. shipyard were determined to do more.

1. Amazing people, amazing times
I know the several of the shipyards on the East Coast competed to build more ships in a shorter time then other yards. We have one shipyard around here that was turning out several ships a month. I would agree, I do not see things like this happening again in our near future.

3. It's a reminder of what this country was capable of when...
a true threat existed that could potentially have wiped out democracy in Europe and enslaved/killed an entire race of people.

It really fries my ass when people have told me if I oppose the war in Iraq that I would have just let Hitler go on as well. What a crock!

4. that's the worst
anti-this-war doesn't mean, to me at least, anti-war period

i supported our actions into afghanistan until i realized how badly we fucked even that up (mostly because of the preparation for iraq)

war is terrible, but world war II HAD to be fought and there is no way around that

i don't hate truman for dropping the bomb(s) and even if FDR did look for excuses to go to war then so be it. hitler needed to be stopped and shit, (with the benefit of hindsight obviously) i would've supported a preemptive strike on his nazi ass
