I would vote: yes, it is.

Add: But only because I thought you meant "conservatism." Taking your spelling at face value, I'm not sure what you mean.

5. Yes rejecting religious and moral "authority" is a good thing.

Skepticism and relativism lead to unbiased and well debated policy decisions. Nihilism would not mean mean the end of democracy since government would still be run on truths derived at an individual level. So how would things like economic populism be impeded by nihilism? Many areas could still be voted and acted upon progressively.

6. Skepticism
is an element of nihilism, but not it's definition.

8. Skepticism is an immutable part of nihilism
and optimism is an immutable part of progressivism.

A few more questions to consider:

Is nihilism compatible with optimism?

I would say no.

Is skepticism compatible with progressivism?

Most definitely.

Does skepticism invalidate optimism?

Of course not.

9. But don't human emotions predate 19th century philosophy?
Edited on Mon Dec-20-04 03:04 PM by wuushew
Compassion, empathy and communal concern seem to have developed during human evolution. How would adopting tenets of nihilism destroy the powerful positive human tendencies that have and continue to shape public policy?

12. Why would a person
with compassion, empathy and communal concern:

1. deny all existence?

2. believe that all values are baseless and that nothing can be known or communicated?

3. reject all distinctions in moral or religious value, and repudiate all previous theories of morality or religious belief?

4. believe that destruction of existing political or social institutions is necessary for future improvement?

Seems a little odd to me...

10. nihilism, sophistry will be the death of humanity
"when words lose their meaning", etc
no meaning, no logic, no meaningfull communication to speak of, and cooperation on anything more then slightly complex becomes problematic.
Babylon, anyone?

14. Assuming that nihilism promotes a "every man for himself" mentality...
(Is that too much to assume?)

Wouldn't the Republican Party be a better fit?

Just wondering...

16. If you like,
I can try to 'splain it a little.

I'm sure you can see that it's a poll, and I assume that you know the definitions of nihilism and progressivism (or can look them up).

What don't you understand?
