Are both Harkin and Clinton about to support Dean?
This was from Dean's blog, not sure what it means.

Iowa Reports: The Harkin Steak Fry
The good folks on the ground in Iowa send along the following invitation for all of you. -- Joe R.

You only throw a party for 26 years in a row if you really know what you're doing. Iowa's Senator Tom Harkin really knows how to throw a party.

At the Harkin Steak Fry we're always treated to some friends of Senator Harkin's like Jim Jeffords, Al Gore, and James Carville. President Clinton likes the Steak Fry so much he'll be back for his third.

And why wouldn’t he? When you go to the annual Harkin Steak Fry you get good, quality Iowa beef, you get enough to drink, and the company can't be beat. As far as party guests go, Iowa Democrats are as good as it gets.

This year we will also get a chance to enjoy our steak in the company of Howard Dean. Yes we are lucky. And you, dear bloggers, are all invited.

On Saturday, September 13, at 3:00 PM for a very reasonable $25 you can all join us in Indianola,IA. Contact Aaron Leavy to make it happen (aleavy@deanforamerica.com or 515-243-5433).

Steak, Dean, Clinton, Harkin, and thousands of Iowa Democrats ... can you say Dean-licious?

What do you think?

3. So it's official Clark is running?
If so I wouldn't doubt it. Though I just find it odd Dean, Harkin and Clinton will be together - without any other Dem candidate.

6. Don't see anything on that site about who's going to be there.
Edited on Fri Sep-05-03 11:53 PM by Sean Reynolds
All I know is that it sounded as if it were only those three. I may be wrong.

ON EDIT I had to scroll over the text to see it.

I dunno, just going by what I read.

10. I think that
at $25 a pop, it's going to be one hell of a steak fry. Sounds like an open to the public event. I wouldn't read too much into it.

11. It means he wants supporters there
Edited on Sat Sep-06-03 12:06 AM by loyalsister
Unfortunately, it looks like the higher ups are spreading that rumor to motivate supporters to attend the event. They want to get a lot of supporters there for it. They are saying it's "because he's getting an endorsement." I don't think there's any way in hell Clinton or Harkin will endorse Dean or anyone right now. It would be bad manners. All nine candidates are invited to this event.
Do any of us want Clinton's endorsement to be useless in the general election? It will be if he endorses in the primary and his guy doesn't win. Not only that, if Hillary never had reason to be mad at him before, publicly dissing her collegues would probably break the camel's back. I know they operate pretty much seperately, but they cross paths and talk and there would be too much room for speculation and assumption.
Harkin won't endorse because he's a professional, and I'm sure he wants his endorsement to go a long way in the general, too.

"The crowded Democratic field of nine gave Harkin too many choices for a keynote speaker. The senator, who has not made his preference known in the presidential primary, decided instead to go with the Democrat who won the presidency in 1992 and 1996."

12. Not only that, but, Clinton is NO FAN of Joe Trippi.
Or is that just Whitewater under the bridge, now?

18. Funny but his wife
who should know blames the NYT do I really have to dig that stuff out again. We know from her book that it was brought up by the NYT either 7 or 14 days before Brown did. I proved that, you know it, I know it, and the people of DU know it.

21. You conveniently forget the story had NO legs
and was dead when Jerry Brown threw the Whitewater charges at Clinton during a LIVE televised debate. The GOP operatives ran with it pointing to Brown's accusation as the catalyst.

14. I think Clinton will wait to see what Clark does
From what people have been saying, I doubt Clinton will endorse anyone until Clark makes his decision.

There is plenty of time.

16. I got an invitation to this. Thinking about going.
That would be quite a treat to see Clinton! And I've heard so much about how dynamic Dean is. It's a 3 hour drive but I'm considering it.

I might start another thread on this to see if other Iowans are going too.

20. Clinton will not endorse anyone until it is clear who the nominee
will be. I have heard that George McGovern was leaning towards endorsing Dean.
