The 2 Fundies in our office seem awfully cocky lately. |
|
I work in a small office in Portland. We have 2 extremely loosely wired "Fundies" in our office. One is the receptionist, who I've complained about before. This is the one who brings her bible in to the lunchroom and reads out of it for us "sinner slobs", just in case. (I've started eating in my cubicle lately).
She is always referring to her fundamentalist church, or the bible in one way or another. Even at work!!!! Other co-workers are angry about it, but because they are really nice, they've been looking the other way.
Fundie #2: the computer programmer. We went out to lunch a few weeks ago, and he proceeded to tell me that "it didn't rain before Noah's Ark". I sat frozen, as the lettuce started falling out of my mouth from my salad. I was trying to figure out if he was joking or not.
He wasn't.
Here's the problem. After BeetleBrain's "re-selection", these 2 have been the Cock of the Walk. They've been extremely self-confident, more annoying than usual. I've had to really clamp down on them a couple of times, because they're overstepping their boundaries.
"Thanks Bush" for making these people feel special, all of a sudden. If it wasn't for you and your Unholy Alliance with the Unhinged Right, these people would have been clandestine, with their radical beliefs.
As it is, they're flaunting their stuff and it's pissing me off.

They think everybody likes them when most people don't. Look at their demands like that fucker in Alabama who wants to ban all gay literature or this ridiculous Christmas controversy.

5. The "no rain" idea comes from a verse in Genesis |
|
where it said something like "in those days a mist would rise up every morning" or something to that effect. From that it has been extrapolated that possibly it didn't actually rain before Noah.

|
I believe you have every right to firmly tell them to back off. That their proselytizing is out of bounds and you'd prefer they keep it to themselves. Tell them you're "covered under another policy", whatever.
Explain that IF you WANT to know what they have to say, you'll ASK them. Like it was in days gone by...
As a former Fundie myself, I'd have HEAPS of data I could use to confound them. They can go sit in their cars and read the bible like I did, once upon a time.
You don't have to be violent or foul just Frank. SPEAK UP!
Good Luck

Rather than eating in your cubicle, you could borrow her bible, and find some nice choice passages, like (paraphrasing here from bad memory):
"A camel will pass through the eye of a needle easier than a rich man get into heaven"
"Turn the other cheek"
"You shall be judged by how you treat the most unfortunate in your society" (sounds a lot like socialism, doesn't it?!?)
and many others. People like these typically can't stand to have the hypocrisies and inconsistencies of their positions pointed out to them.
You don't even have to fight with them. Just point out with a smile (but firmly and relentlessly) the inconsistency of their positions.

14. I would say reading from the bible at lunch is overstepping - |
|
your boundaries. My God, why does an employer let employees get away with this crap?! You have a right to sit there and eat your lunch without being harassed by a bible thumping wing nut.
What the fuck is going on with our country???? Who will stand up to these fascists??
I am really pissed, now.
Maybe you should bring in some books from other religions and read to her. Start with Scientology, maybe?? If your boss says something to you, tell him/her that you have as much right to read from your book as the fundies do.

19. Your boss needs to do something-he can be sued over their behavior. |
|
What they are doing is absolutely NOT okay in a workplace, and if he (or she) does not put an end to their actions, he can be sued (hostile workplace, etc.). You should take this to your HR person immediately, and point out that you're aware of the legal ramifications of letting their behavior go unaddressed.

An urgent email was quickly sent out to everyone today, and it said just that. There was an implied threat in there: anyone who continues this is guilty of 'harassment' and "In our employee manual, this is subject to disciplinary action".
I read this post earlier today, and it motivated me to do something! It worked.

26. Some guy at my work told me to take off my Kerry bumper sticker... |
|
I said, "I didn't vote for moron, I voted for Kerry."
And he issued the standard line, "get over it"
Which I responded, "not in a country that is glorifying an unjust war and has a record breaking deficit, I will never get over it. Getting over it means I approve, I don't approve."
He walked away and mentioned something about a dewey bumper sticker and I replied, "dewey was a republican, seems like you didn't get over that." I laughed a hardly laugh and walked inside.

27. reminds me of when I worked for world com |
|
it wasn't quite as bad as your situation, of course. world com had faults a plenty but like any big corporation, they wouldn't stand for harrasment (since that could cost them money)
But we had a lot of co-workers who went heavy on the christian imagery. With bible verses tacked on thier cubicles and angels and christian screen savers. One went so far as to make it big point to say that her God wasn't the same as My God. (Like I cared but the way she said it , it was if I had a fake God compared to her real one..whatever)
Well I was one of three Pagans in that office so we put out our Pagan screen savers and Charms and Talismans. My little gargoyles kept perch right on top of my computer.
A bit childish, perhaps, But I think it served to keep us from feeling buried or put out.

28. An update on the "Holy Office", Wednesday |
|
(heh heh). Well, thanks to everyone who gave me very good advice on this thread, I summoned up my courage and sent an email to the President (not Bush, the Company president!).
Everything went very well. An email was sent to all the co-workers that Bible Study in the lunchroom is henceforth Forbidden. Furthermore, no preaching or "saving" us "slobs".
It turns out that there were many people besides me who were upset abot this!heh he life will be a little easier now.
Thanks everyone.

i challenge all i come around preaching who is christian who is not, who is going to hell who is not. i am in the middle of an area full of fundamentalist. and not a single one has taken up my offer in challenging my person. not one. i have done it with the preachers the housewives the men that expect me to be quiet and submissive. none challenge me
dont put up with it. you cannot put up with it. we have to own our own righteousness, and do it in love, showing them how it is done, but never is it accepting we lack, cause in accepting allowing us to lack, the whole world will lack
