Poll question: Do you think Lincoln Chafee will switch parties any time soon? |
|
Edited on Sat Sep-06-03 02:05 AM by TheYellowDog
I really think he will. He was one of only 3 republicans to vote against the tax cut this year, and he was the only Republican in the senate to vote against war with iraq. He is a solid socially liberal Republican, and while his AFL-CIO record leaves a little to be desired, he is getting higher and higher scores as time goes on. I bet Chafee is pissed off at the direction the Republican party is going in. What do you think? Will Chafee become a Democrat anytime soon? Respond below if you want.

2. The real blockbuster would be if... |
|
... Linclon Chafee, Olympia Snow and Susan Collins join Jim Jeffords as independents. While Chafee is definitely the closest senator to this decision, don't count the Maine ladies out yet. Any thoughts on this from the great states of Rhode Island & Maine?

3. Snowe would be the next possibility, |
|
but I doubt that the Maine ladies would ever do it. They are almost completely with Bush on fiscal policy.

7. actually that's not true. Bush is fiscally irresponsible and |
|
they've made an issue of it. Very pointedly too. They seem to be Republicans out of convenience/expedience, but that's true of nearly all the New England Repubs.

I have been in touch with the offices of both senators on both the "tax-cut" and Pryor. The last time, Pryor, I suggested that the ladies may have joined the party of Lincoln & T.R., but may now reconsider since it's become the party of lott, santorum & halliburton. :silly:
The essential message I got was that they're both proud to be r's  , and are working to bring the party back from it's current extremism. I thought that this was B.S. Snowe makes an occasional independent stand, but Collins is too disturbingly compliant with the cheney-bush policy to make me believe that.
In fct, it's my ire with our 2 "moderate" senators that made me start using...
Any D over any r in '04! :bounce: ... as a sign off and made it my signature.

You are assuming his party switch would be to Democratic. I think he would switch to Independant - so the poll is misleading.

Chafee is a RINO - he votes with the GOP only on clearly partisan things such as committees, confirming cabinet appointments, etc., just like Miller and the Democratic party. If he switches, he'll probably join Jeffords as an Independent-who-votes-with-the-Democrats-on-partisan-issues.

5. He's a better asset as a Republican |
|
Visible Rockefeller Republicans might help some of the others rediscover their consciences and encourage them to come out of the closet. I think it's possible that there are a few more out there than we know of.
