Blast the media with George W. Bush's 1978 Social Security claims!!!
Thanks to the DUer JHB for this info.

Republicans have been crying wolf over Social Security for decades, and now Bush is trying to whip up a crisis so he can get support for privatizing Social Security. Their intent is not to save SS, but to destroy it, and they've been doing this for decades. According to the Texas Observer here, George W. Bush claimed in 1978 when he was running for Congress that Social Security would go bust by 1988 if people were not allowed to invest the money themselves. HA! Some prediction, must be more of that "fuzzy math". Blast the media with this info and tell them it's time for the Republicans to stop crying wolf and come clean with their intentions. For more info on their intentions see this post by Digby.

12. Nobody except radical fascists MIGHT have been saying that.
That certainly does not include anyone with an education.

17. It was an added bonus that it raised much needed revenue .....
to make up for the huge Reagan deficits at the time, brought on by the first episode of insane supply-side, tax-cutting frenzy. Now we have the same problem again and we need some more revenue?

3. I'm with DUgosh
"Everybody" was not saying that in 1978. Besides, SS was never partially privatized which is what Dubya said needed to be done back in 1978 to prevent it from collapsing by 1988. It's complete BS.

14. Yes, Virginia.....SS has been "going broke"
for decades now. Over and over we hear the same refrain. And over and over it does not go broke. In short, once again, it could be fixed to be solvent again, should the government and its people care to, instead of dissolving it.

I find it ironic that part of the reason SS is in trouble is that Bush, the one proclaiming the SS's impending insolvency, is that Bush stole and spent the general funds upon which SS relied for its solvency, as set up by Congress for that express purpose.

Sort of like killing a person and then decrying that something must be done about the crime wave!

6. awesome
that ranks right up there with Dick Armey's warning about Clinton's budget...

http://www.issues2000.org/2004/Dick_Gephardt_Budget_+_Economy.htm

(Gephardt speaking)

In 1993, I was the majority leader who led with Bill Clinton to get this economy straightened out. Minority Leader Dick Armey said it would create a depression. He wasn't wrong; he was dead wrong. You remember? 23 million new jobs in seven years. Unemployment was at 3 percent. We took a $5 trillion deficit and turned it into a $5 trillion surplus. We know how to do this. I know how to do it. And when I'm president, we'll get this economy moving again. I'll get rid of the Bush tax cuts.

9. Many Republicans claimed Clinton would send us into a Depression...
...with his plan to raise taxes on the rich in 1993. Not only did it work, it made the economy BOOM. I'm sick of their lies and spin, they don't care about average Americans, only lining their pockets.

13. GOP is being bribed by Merril Lynch, Citigroup, etc.
to "privatize" Social Security, so that these financial corporations can get a cut of the fund. SS has something like a 2% overhead - much, much more efficient than anything run by Wall Street.

Social Security "privatization" is nothing but a scam.

18. OASDI has a 0.72% administrative overhead
Administrative expenses in 2003 were $4,562,000,000. Benefit payments were $470,778,000,000. That's 0.97% overhead relative to benefit payments. In relation to total revenues (which is how business calculates such ratios), the overhead was 0.72%. (Revenuses were $631,886,000,000 in 2003.)
