More religion.....
Sometimes I feel like the DU discussion forum has turned into the religion page from a small town newspaper.... "I believe that...." "Well, Jesus said..."

Us nonbelievers continue to wonder at you believers.

What century IS this, anyhow?

Most Americans believe the virgin birth is literally true, a NEWSWEEK poll finds
WEB EXCLUSIVE
Newsweek Updated: 10:49 a.m. ET Dec. 10, 2004

Dec. 5 - Seventy-nine percent of Americans believe that, as the Bible says, Jesus Christ was born of the Virgin Mary, without a human father, according to a new NEWSWEEK poll on beliefs about Jesus.

Sixty-seven percent say they believe that the entire story of Christmas—the Virgin Birth, the angelic proclamation to the shepherds, the Star of Bethlehem and the Wise Men from the East—is historically accurate. Twenty-four percent of Americans believe the story of Christmas is a theological invention written to affirm faith in Jesus Christ, the poll shows. In general, say 55 percent of those polled, every word of the Bible is literally accurate. Thirty-eight percent do not believe that about the Bible.

In the NEWSWEEK poll, 93 percent of Americans say they believe Jesus Christ actually lived and 82 percent believe Jesus Christ was God or the Son of God. Fifty-two percent of all those polled believe, as the Bible proclaims, that Jesus will return to earth someday; 21 percent do not believe it. Fifteen percent believe Jesus will return in their lifetime; 47 percent do not, the poll shows.

Sixty-two percent say they favor teaching creation science in addition to evolution in public schools; 26 percent oppose such teaching, the poll shows. Forty-three percent favor teaching creation science instead of evolution in public schools; 40 percent oppose the idea.

1. So you have a problem with the DU discussion page being religious
and you post this article. One has to wonder why? Oddly enough those of us that espouse tolerance towards Christianity find ammunition in your own article. Ahh the irony.

2. Jesus is the Charles Manson that Christians will do anything for
By that I mean that he is the central cult figure of Christianity. All religions are cults. Religion is a great way to control people though. It used to be the Old Gods of Zeus and Apollo. Now it's "God" and "Jesus". The big question is - Will religious people ever figure out they are being used by those who seek power and control? My magic 8-ball says Nope.

4. I saw a picture of Charley Manson once, but
as it turned out -- it was supposed to be a picture of Christ. I see some parallels.

__________________________

I dreamed I stood upon a hill, and, lo!
The godly multitudes walked to and fro
Beneath, in Sabbath garments fitly clad,
With pious mien, appropriately sad,
While all the church bells made a solemn din -
A fire-alarm to those who lived in sin.

Then saw I gazing thoughtfully below,
With tranquil face, upon that holy show
A tall, spare figure in a robe of white,
Whose eyes diffused a melancholy light.

“God keep you, stranger,” I exclaimed,”You are
No doubt (your habit shows it) from afar;
And yet I entertain the hope that you,
Like these good people, are a Christian, too.”

He raised his eyes and with a look so stern
It made me with a thousand blushes burn
Replied - his manner with disdain was spiced:
“What! I a Christian? No, indeed! I’m Christ.”

5. Nah, just keep believing in fairy tales if that makes ya happy
I don't care what anyone believes. People should be free to worship doo-doo on a stick if they want to. :P

7. I don't see anywhere he said that, AKU.
Maybe he's just going on Faith?

"Nice bit of superiority there" - Irony Alert!

9. They are mine, and my point of view. What were you expecting?
I never claimed to "know it all". Nor did I ask people to "bow down" to me.

10. Oh ok. From your post you made it seem like
it was almost a given that all religious people in the world were deluded. That would seem to be somewhat elitist in a way since that would make you right and the majority of the world wrong. Perhaps you would care to elaborate.

11. Certainly not as bad you state
Edited on Fri Dec-24-04 06:58 PM by FM Arouet666
I am surprised by the number of heated debates sparked by religious topics. But to say that the tenor of the board is religious, is a bit of a stretch.

I am an atheist, but agree completely with the rules of the discussion forum. We must accept all types of democrats, the heated debates are part of learning about other points of view. Ultimately, the board is stronger because of it's inclusiveness.

However, you have reason to be upset. The majority of Americans believe in religious mythology over scientific reality. Humankind has advanced considerably because of scientific inquiry, whereas religion breeds stagnation. :evilfrown:

12. 43% say they favor teaching creation science instead of evolution...
in school? :puke: :puke: :puke: That is so stupid. WTF is wrong with these people. Why do they hate America? I thought people had more respect for the separation of church and state. I hate the thought of this coming theocracy. :puke:
Creation science is an oxymoron.
