Peace On Earth
Will never Arrive
So long as fictitious Profit
Can be Extracted by Few
At the Cost of Many

Peace On Earth
Will never Come
Until we Feel
The suffering of Others
As our Own

Peace On Earth
Can never Be
Until each of us Knows
In our Hearts and
In our Bones
That there is only One Thing
            That manifests as The Innumerable:
That every Man, Woman and Child,
                        That every living thing,
                              And all that is IS
OF One Ineffable Source

Peace On Earth Will Come
When our Hearts Break Open
Upon the Great Shore of Being
And the Suffering of our Ignorance
Is Washed Away in Joy

4. Can't Find My Way Home
Can't Find My Way Home
(Steve Winwood)

Come down off your throne
And leave your body alone
Somebody must change

You are the reason
I've been waiting so long
Somebody holds the key

Well I'm near the end and just ain't got the time
And I'm wasted and I can't find my way home

Come down own your own
And leave your body alone
Somebody must change

You are the reason
I've been waiting all these years
Somebody holds the key

But I'm near the end and just ain't got the time
Oh and I'm wasted and I can't find my way home

But I can't find my way home
But I can't find my way home
But I can't find my way home
But I can't find my way home
Still I can't find my way home
And I aint done nothing wrong
But I can't find my way home

9. Thanks so much.
Both for writing this and for allowing us to share it.

As you may note in my post below (#8), I've become a bit of a stickler for giving accurate credit. :D

7. A gift for you
I started a DU thread on 15 of my favorite quotes related to our fight for justice:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x1450883

In the 11th reply to my original post in that thread, DUer 0007 (in a message titled "In a Nutshell") gave the text of one of the truest things ever written in such a brief space, called "Desiderata." As I understand it, its author is unknown. I had heard of it but did not have a full copy, short as it is. Now I do. Now we all do, if you don't already.

Even if you have already read this piece, I urge you to do so again. It's especially appropriate for the holidays, the season of peace and the gateway to a new year of possibilities. It is nondenominational, and though one might quibble with a word here and there, it feels very right to me. I hope it speaks to you, too.

Best to you and those you care for.

8. Desiderata
One of my favorite pieces of all time, true for all time. However, I was one of those who for quite a while mistakenly spread the fiction that it was anonymous and found "on the wall of St. Paul's Church in 1692." Here's the accurate update:

"Desiderata" was written in 1927 by Max Ehrmann (1872-1945). In 1956, the rector of Baltimore's St. Paul's Church anthologized the poem in a mimeographed pamphlet of inspirational writings for his congregation. Someone reprinting it later, separated from its original credit, erroneously described it as having been found in old St. Paul's Church dated 1692, misinterpreting the church letterhead. The year 1692 is in fact the founding date of St. Paul's Church and has nothing to do with the poem.

13. Thanks for the clarification. There is also the 'anti-Desiderata'
which I won't quote but has a 'truth' of its own. What happens when we do not feel our connections.

It (among others) can be found here:

The "Undesiderata" is certainly a cynic's version -- focused more on self protection than self expression -- but it does have it's own truth.

Had never seen or heard of that before -- thank you!

On edit: I hadn't scrolled down to read all the other versions. The "Anti-Desiderata," is frightening but also has truth for frightened people in dangerous times.

Each version on that page has its own truth -- but I still love the original best. :)

20. Interesting. Martin Luther King must have been borrowing from him:
"We have learned to fly the air like birds and swim the sea like fish, but we have not learned the simple art of living together as brothers.  Our abundance has brought us neither peace of mind nor serenity of spirit."  ~Martin Luther King, Jr., Strength to Love, 1963
