Help tell those "Christian" ID -folks the truth...
Take a look at this:

http://www.evangelicaloutpost.com/archives/001094.html#more

(Also see comment on my blog today:http://mumonno.blogspot.com/2004/12/when-fundamentalists-take-over-school.html)

Evidently, this "Evangelical" is mad that the WaPo (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A25961-2004Dec25.html ) dared to portray fundamentalists as, well, wacky.

I think it's a good idea to tell them simply: your wackiness is not part of the America I know.

1. Why do evangelicals deny a belief in the supernatural?
They easily dismiss anyone else's belief in gods, but not their own; then, they claim their belief is quantifiable.

Example: There are no ghosts, yet there are invisible beings with unimaginable powers who must be worshiped?

I just find that weird.

3. There is SO much weirdness to be found...
I think their blindness, when it comes to the supernatural, is because their leaders tell them such beliefs are satanic, that is, satan speaks through astrology, extra-sensory perception, etc., and they say that because they want to keep power over them, and AWAY from the individual. Do not believe anything but what we tell you to believe... borg-like mind control junk.

5. What I've always found funny
is that these wingnuts dismiss astrology and fortune telling as "satanic," when THEY are the ones who predict doomsday by the book of Revelations.

7. Keep 'em scared and you have more power over them
...hmmm, sort of like what our current administration does to us.

It is interesting that early Christians believed in astrology, and practiced it, hence the astrological references in the story of the Christmas star and the 3 magi, and according to some, there is astrological--and certainly numerological--symbolism in the book of Revelations itself.

I am not a biblical scholar but I do know there are also Bible passages that pertain to reincarnation, and one particularly intriguing verse that mentions the "silver cord" (a term I know from studies of the paranormal--astral projection and near-death experiences).

"...Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern...Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it." (from Ecclesiastes 12:6-7)

2. Why does "complexity" support intelligent design?
I have never understood that.

8. Don't try. The leaders like to mesmerize the sheep
...with hypnotic mind-numbing spin and pseudo-intellectualism that the sheep cannot understand so they will follow their intellectually superior leaders and therefore feel more intelligent themselves.

9. I believe that it has something to do with their ability to use
their imagination. Those who believe in this theory claim their is no absolute evidence that shows how certain "Complex" traits develop over time. A common example is the Eye. It's function is so complex and specialized that they postulate there is no way a primitive sensory organ found in a simple organism could have developed over time into the specialized eye. In particular the feeling is that middle of the road changes would cause the organism to fail so the eye would never develop.

Interestingly this is what Darwin actually wrote in the Origin of Species in his Conclusions.

"Authors of the highest eminence seem to be fully satisfied with the view that each species has been independently created. To my mind it accords better with what we know of the laws impressed on matter by the Creator, that the production and extinction of the past and present inhabitants of the world should have been due to secondary causes, like those determining the birth and death of the individual. When I view all beings not as special creations, but as the lineal descendants of some few beings which lived long before the first bed of the Silurian system was deposited, they seem to me to become ennobled."

Based on this I have always wondered on both sides of this argument why evolution continues to be such a threat to the belief in God. The more I learn, the more convinced I am that it has more to do with individuals (and groups) ability to have a faith they can find a way to validate rather then what Darwin actually said.

I would venture to say that many who don't believe in evolution (and likely many who do) actually know very little about it but rather use it as a tool to galvanize their side of the argument.

4. It'd be easier to play to their fears

All we really need to do with these people is reveal some of Bush's "hidden" policies that they would find objectionable(those which the MSM have not revealed and yet they remain quietly available at whitehouse.gov or congress.org, ect) like his strange proposal to test all school children for mental illness.

National ID cards, snooping into taxes, snooping on the internet, and more-make sure they know that it won't just be their beloved holy leader who has these powers, but also any and all future administrations, perhaps even someone they find wholly and morally objectionable, will have the power to peek into every corner of their lives.

My mini-crusade includes sending letters of concern to churches in my area and beyond that discuss many of these questionable policies. I am hoping to make a dent with the fundies where I live.
For those moderate Christians who already supported Kerry, it will only confirm what they already know- Bush should not be in power.

6. You want to see weird? I'll show you weird...
One of the patron saints of this movement is William Dembski, who had been a Ph.D. in math, before he decided to torpedo his career "studying" "Intelligent" "Design."
(See http://www.secweb.org/asset.asp?AssetID=200 for a good update.)

Dembski has lent his name to this prestigious institution, who (http://www.manminresearch.org/html/home2.htm) use Dembski's nonsense for justifying faith healing.
