Treat others like we want to be treated is WRONG...It should be
Edited on Tue Dec-28-04 01:59 PM by xultar
Treat others as they wish to be treated.

Why

OK, I'm a Chrstian and you are a Jew should I treat you like a Christian or a Jew? I would treat you as you tell me.

If you like to be beat down, don't treat me as though I like to be beat down. Unless I tell you I like the beat down. You should treat me as I tell you.

I think that is how the Christians tend to think that forcing their religion on us is a good thing. Don't treat me like you want. Treat me like I want.

Be just be aware of who I am as an individual and treat me as such.

2. How about we treat OURSELVES to a big glass of Ovaltine
and regard all other human beings as nigh-psychotic bags of protoplasm.

Humans are bad news, man. They got my number and they're gonna get you too.

3. you are correct
but sadly, many do not see the difference. And when religion enters the mix, it's even more FUBAR because one group will see their creed as the only 'true" belief.

7. Nope, you got it self-centered.
Treat other as you would be treated IF YOU WERE IN THEIR SHOES. You don't say "I am a jew, I would want to be treated as a jew, therefore I will treat this muslim as a jew." Its too self-centered to do the analysis that way, what you say to yourself is "If I were this muslim, how would I want to be treated." Just try, I know it can be hard, to get out of yourself and look at big picture, like "I would wanted my religion to be respected, therefore I shall respect this person's religion, even if it is different."

Only someone insufferably self-centered would think "I am hungry, so I will give everyone food, even if they are thirsty and not hungry."

I mean, Jesus, you think you can improve on the golden rule? You think a lot of yourself, don't you?

as much.

Treat another person as they want to be treated. That is all I'm sayin. My examples may not be correct. So I fixed them for you. Please accept my apologies oh' omnipotent one.

With that said, I am correct. We should treating others as they want to be treated is correct no matter whose shoes they are wearing.

If they wanted to be treated as a Jew I'd treat them as a Jew and say Happy Hanukkah instead of Merry Christmas. I am saying we should get to know our fellow man and understand and respect their wishes.

....as I bow to your majesty.

11. You're asking people to be psychic rather than empathetic.
I can't read your mind, so how can I possibly know how you would like to be treated?

What I can do, all I can do, is put myself in your shoes and adjust my treatment of you accordingly.

Unfortunately I think you may have it backwards. "Treat me how I want to be treated, and I want to be treated like I have God's cell phone number."

In other words, "Worship me, sinner."

14. Get to know a human, then treat them. I know my Jewish friends I know
my Muslim friends...

I'm just saying to get to know your fellow man.

What is so difficult?

So lets treat them the way we wanna be treated. Is that what you're saying. Say MERRY Christmas to everyone Jews, Atheist, Muslims...let's make every one eat Pork and Beef, and Milk.

When I have my friends over I fix a Vegan dish, I'll have some Kosher, and I don't serve pork.

Or should I develop basic human kindness, and use that on everyone, regardless of race, religion, or diet?

No need to get pissy, and believe me, no reason to take this discussion that seriously. You'll give yourself an ulcer.

If you wanted nothing but total agreement you should have probably mentioned that up front. You know, so we could treat you the way you want to be treated.

it seriously...I just like to see who here will fight and throw poop just for the sake of throwing poop. That's all. I don't get ulcers, I give'em, ask my mom. She'll tell you that's part of my charm.

Total agreement is silly. But arguing for the sake of argument is even more silly. I just figured I'd apply the rule and it worked beautifully right here in our exchange.

I'm not usually known for pissy posts. But I'll oblige those who like that type of exchange. :)

31. Well in a way maybe its all semantics.
Its like the objective standard in law and the subjective standard in law. The objective standard that is used in many areas of law says, for example, that self defense using deadly force is justified if a reasonable person in the same circumstances would have had a justified belief his life was in imminent danger. Its "objective" because it does not depend on the actual beleif of the person in question, it depends on what a reasonable person in their shoes would have beleived.

There is another test, the subjective test, it doesn't ask what a reasonable person would have believed, it asks what the person in question actually believed. Thus if the person in question is drunk or drugged and halucinating that he is being attacked by monsters, he or she would still be excused for killing someone because they subjectively beleived that they were being attacked by monsters (thats why this test is not used often).

As a practical matter, is there really a difference? The only way we can ever really judge what another person is thinking or feeling is by trying to imagine what we would think or feel in their place anyway, isn't it, its just a matter of being mindful of all the differences between us and them, of being aware of all the things that make up "their place" when we ask ourselves the question.

Both tests, both methods, can produce absurd results if pushed to odd extremes, both the golden and the platinum rules.

So is there a need to argue? I think you know what the golden rule means, and it works, as long as you don't try to reduction ad absurdum it, and the same with your platinum rule. Remember, the golden rule doesn't require you to serve people vanilla ice cream because thats what you would want, even if they like chocolate. It requires you to serve them what they want, because that is in fact what you would want, to be served what you want.

In fact, the platinum rule is subsumed within the golden rule, since everyone wants to be treated the way they want to be treated, the golden rule requires you to treat people the way they want to be treated.

first (treat others as you wish to be treated) as the "Golden Rule" and the second (treat others as they wish to be treated) as the "Platinum Rule."

I agree that we should treat others as they want to be treated.

I was merely pointing out that it is not a new concept. It has been around a long time - known as the Platinum Rule.

13. Isn't it "Do unto others as they do unto you"? That way you get the
"others" level of expected treatment by their actions at the same time you decode your expected level of treatment to them. Which by the way does NOT exclude both persons being nasty pricks, but should eliminate one nasty prick from getting overly kind treatment.

Or, just don't be a dickhead (aka bush*lover), works too.

33. I think Malcolm X said it best...
"I believe in the brotherhood of man, all men, but I don’t believe in brotherhood with anybody who doesn’t want brotherhood with me. I believe in treating people right, but I’m not going to waste my time trying to treat somebody right who doesn’t know how to return the treatment." -- Malcolm X
