a heart-wrenching picture from the Asian tsunami

Karl Nilsson of Lulo, Sweden, poses with a sigh saying his parent and brothers are missing Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, in Phuket, Thailand. The young boys parents were swept out to sea Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004, when a tidal wave struck their beach hotel just north of Phuket, Thailand. (AP Photo/David Longstreath)

looking at this picture evokes in me the memory of walking among all the fliers that were posted around NY following 9/11.....

1. What really bothers me
is that we, Americans in general that is, don't bother to pay attention until the children affected are blonde and blue eyed.

3. The child lost his parents
I'm affected by that, not because he's blond and blue eyed.

4. Not sure what you mean....
the photo on the Tuesday issue of the "New York Times" is one of the most tragic I have ever seen. Not one blonde among all those dead children. Don't you have any empathy for this poor child? He is probably in shock.

6. Empathy? Yes, of course.
This is a major tragedy.

But I am shocked at the reactions of many people around me, who just seem to chalk it up as 'another large number of dead brown people' and don't seem to care until a photo like this comes up.

2. That poor little boy.

It is so sad. I am sure he and his family were having a happy vacation and now he is probably an orphan.

8. At least the town was appropriately named:
"phuket, phuket, phuket!"
