CNN is getting e-mails protesting the videos of dead children.
Edited on Tue Dec-28-04 09:33 PM by jdj
(In the tsunami coverage) I hadn't thought of it as out of the scope of the coverage...is this the "beautiful mind" sydrome at work here, or does anyone here agree that this is unnecessary?

Is it a racial thing...I have not seen any video of dead white children...I'm interested in what others think.

10. They're brown, muslim and the enemy.
Most Murikans could care less about dead Eye-raki children.

3. I hope it makes people more concerned and want to help instead of
ignoring it all like they do most things, for example our fraud election. Similiar to pictures of war, reality slapping them in the face, wake up and help us out. * should use his $40 million on this international problem not a party.

5. I was thinking about this the other day.
There was some video on CNN of a father carrying his dead child through the debris. I simply want to know, why is it acceptable to show this over and over, but I never see any footage on CNN of dead Iraqi children that are dead as a result of this damned war! :wtf:

7. CNN should ignore the emails
How can people try to grasp the enormity of the situation without those pictures?

8. They just don't want to face the brutal facts.
Death is never pretty. It is especially not pretty in a situation like that. But, as much as it pains me to say this, CNN deserves guarded kudos for showing the graphic consequences of something like this.

For far too long, we have been trying to run away from the brutal realities of life, into some never-neverland of warm 'n fuzzies. That fact accounts for a lot of the isolation from the world we are experiencing now.

We have to find our place in this world, along side the rest of it. We have to understand that we are interconnected with it. We do not stand alone, nor can we allow others to stand alone.

This country must wake up. We have been asleep and dreaming for far too long.

11. Yeeeah, real life sucks, doesn't it? Suck it up, kids.

It's called reality. It's a tragedy, and the news shouldn't stop showing it just because children died, and it might affect the delicate sensibilities of sheltered, nitpicky fools who are willfully ignorant. If they're worried about their kids seeing it, they should turn the TV off and allow the rest of us to learn what's happening in the world.

Something tells me that this wouldn't be happening if a major natural disaster occured in America.

14. heard something about that this morning--my thought is that pictures of
the dead and wounded iraqis should be REQUIRED on our front pages each and every morning, along with the pictures of our dead and wounded military. let's see how long bush has ANY approval ratings then

15. Considering that 1/3 of the dead ARE children
WTF do they expect to see?
That's 20,000 dead children!
I heard also today that 30,000 children are orphaned as well.
This is a tragedy that we all need to see and feel... all of it.
We need to be reminded that there are more important things than war and religious bickerings.
This is something that the world has never seen as it is happening.
It could actually unite all countries.

17. weren't 1/3 of dead in Iraq children also ?
a big part has to do with the fact that much of the population of these nations is under 18 so those who die will also likely be those ages.

16. Thai TV
Thai TV is showing some absolutely gruesome footage; I can't watch it. It's not that I don't want to understand the scope, horror, and gravity of the situation, it's that I can't mentally handle it. It's too close and too real already, and seeing babies missing limbs, locals trying to identify and bring in bodies that are just floating around, tourists just wandering around, dazed, broken and confused...it's totally terrifying and mind-boggling, and I just can't handle it.

So I can empathise with people that don't want to watch the CNN coverage, but I think they should just turn it off. I think CNN should keep showing it. Some people can handle it, or at least some of it, and I think it's important that people see what's happening, as it might help to prevent something of this magnitude from happening again. It might improve the resources available for the relief effort.

19. that's actually a very good point.
I guess they are showing this because it is a disaster not a policy.

I really didn't know what to think when Anderson Cooper mentioned the e-mails. CNN is on cable, so people don't have to watch it, they can turn it off.

I guess the reason they don't show the soldiers is because public sentiment could affect this war, yet however nothing can undo this tsunami.

of white children stacked like firewood? It would never happen.

20. The Thing Is Simple, Sir
News is viewed as entertainment; there is only a very small number of people who find pictures of dead children entertaining.

There is a fairly large number of people, on the other hand, who find pictures of explosions, of determined looking young men with guns entertaining.

When a product does not provide people with what they thought they were getting when they acquired it, they tend to complain....
