DU admin and all other users...please read...
Ok...I have given $20.00 to each organization listed on the pinned thread of relief orginizations...here is our chance to prove to all the idiots out there that have used DU to try and show that we don't care...let us join together...users and admin...and raise money and other useful items that we can send to those overseas who have been hit by this event...how about we here at DU do this...set up a collection point to send clothing and food to those countries effected...

I was saving my old clothing to donate to the veterans home...but I think that all the donations that I have given through out the years...and with all the donations that they get...some of my old clothing will do much better in those countries that have been effected by this act of mother nature...

I hope that all of us can pull together and show that we will not wait for the Bush misadministration to help...let's show the world that we...the American people...that we care and we want to help....us liberals/democrats...just maybe we at DU can donate enough clothing and goodwill to those who have lost so much that those who think bad of us here at DU will have to eat their words...let's give what we can...

So how about it admin...what are the chances that DU can set up some kind of donation central type thing...food, clothing, money etc....to help those who really need it the most right now...let's show the right wingers up by donating as much as we can...

just a thought...

1. agree we should all contribute
But I prefer to give to one organization that several. Here are a list of organizations assisting in the Tsunami relief.

Some of the organizations allocate a greater percentage of contributions toward actual relief that others. You can find information on such details on http://www.charitynavigator.org/

3. Red cross requests donations in cash rather than goods
http://www.imcworldwide.org/loc_indonesia_tsunam.shtml

I guess it's easier to allocate resources that way and they don't need to use resources sorting through donated goods. Perhaps you could sell your clothes (on ebay?) and donate the cash?

5. thank you
after months of lurking I FINALLY had to post over this disaster.

I like the boards....generally get a good amount of information here and an occasional tinfoilhat laugh.....but I have finally been angered by this board and decided to post.

I've seen TONS of posts about what the shrub hasnt done or where he went....I've seen the sticky about where to send money to.....but I have yet in TWO DAYS seen one person post about personally helping to organize or lead the support of locaL relief efforts.

WE ARE THE DEMOCRATS!Lets get some relief efforts going folks. We DON'T NEED to sit around waiting on Washington to do this.

We can spend the next umpteen million years debating how shrub sucks over this but there are PEOPLE DYING WHO NEED OUR HELP!

I got off work at 7:30 tonight and spent the next 4 hours at our local little chamber of commerce helping sort/load relief supplies. We ROCKED for such a small community. My town...Tazewell...is small enough that we combined efforts with the next town to be more efficiant.

One of our local councilmen persuaded/pressured a local trucking company to donate use of a tractor trailer.Another got a bloodmobile truck lined up.Several people got assignments early this morning to hit up all the pizza joints to donate pizza to the helpers.

Bottom line?Tonight...our small COMBINED communities...totalling only 25,000 people...have rolled out our SECOND fully loaded semi of supplies.Total blood?...over 700 units and counting.

You would be amazed at the things poeple think of to donate. One guy brought 5 Coleman stoves...didnt know the new ones can run on gas.Another brought lanterns that can be recharged on car lighters. Most of our local stores are OUT of bottled water...all was bought and donated. We must have collected 1000 flashlights and 10000 batteries.

Funny part is..in 4 hours...no one asked anyone if they were repub or dem...no one cared....no one refused a blanket because it was from wal-mart....no one thought of anything but getting the job done. You could walk to the parking lot and see shrub bumpersticker cars parked side by side with Kerry bumpersticker cars...and no one cared. When you're loading that truck with tents and blankets...are you going to care at this moment if the guy giving them to you is a repug or a Dem?Lets all look at the bigger picture guys. This is the largest humanitarian disaster any of us has ever seen and it's only going to get worse if we don't get things going.

GUYS...lets save the blame for later....over 50,000 dead and MANY more will die without help.Lets get out there...find your local relief group and volunteer....if none are around.....get with your local leaders and start a relief drive.Money is great but these people need help.Pressure your local trucking company to donate a truck to haul supplies.Get ALL your local stations to announce regularely where relief collections are being picked up.Lets save some lives folks.
