(AP) -- At the University of North Carolina, three incoming freshmen sue over a reading assignment they say offends their Christian beliefs.

In Colorado and Indiana, a national conservative group publicizes student allegations of left-wing bias by professors. Faculty get hate mail and are pictured in mock "wanted" posters; at least one college says a teacher received a death threat.

FASCISTS!

4. Many Reich Wing bigots portray
Liberals as Communist. It works for them better that way.

3. They should have gone to bible college!
The man was just trying to make everyone see the world through others eyes before they condemn them.
He wasn't forcing them to believe what was written, just read it.

5. You know,

a college religions prerequisite (elective on topic, required in general) would take care of this quite handily. Students could, for example, choose to learn more about their own religion, or could choose to educate themselves on another unfamiliar to them. Another option could be to study how religions affect societies historically and today.

And that's how a truly liberal curriculum would handle the religion issue- by requiring a religion course or the equivalent, but by giving the students a choice on which religion they will study. In other words, by requiring one given religion, the college is in fact not being "liberal", but being "religious conservative", just in another direction.

Too bad these students didn't consider that solution. That they did not only shows they are for the same situation, but favoring their own religion. Fairly transparent, that.

10. Two problems
First, if their own religion was studied objectively, they probably would not like that.
Second, to study something you already know is hardly "broadening" your education.
Finally, since radical islam is the issue du jour, it is arguably the thing most in need of study. Still, there was no similar requirement to study communism while we were in the cold war, but maybe that was because of the war's coldness.

6. In a related story, the Three incoming Freshmen have insisted...
...that their favorite text-book "Sky Fairies & Magic Bunnies" be included with the curriculum.

7. One student had the attitude
that he was paying me to teach him things that would allow him to get and keep a good job, and all of my social criticism was getting in the way of that.
I thought it was funny, I had this accountant from the local hospital volunteer to give a presentation to my business class. So he starts out saying that it is important to think creatively and critically and solve problems and spends his time on sort of a left wing rant about rising health care costs.
I thought it was great, a real business person saying many of the same things that I did. Maybe a hospital bureaucrat is not a real business person, and the students probably thought I set the whole thing up. It was just about the only time I got positive feedback when I was teaching.

8. Ha! That's awesome!
My lib arts degree taught me how to think critically and solve problems. Universities are for teaching you how to think, not teaching you a particular skill. What you do with this knowledge is up to you.

9. I see that a LOT around my place.
The only reason people come here is to get a "License to make FAT CASH", AKA as a MBA or XMBA.

OK, so our rep is more towards Engineering, what wiith all the Astronauts that we've graduated, but to come to a University expecting what amounts to a 4-year Vocational School education....:wtf:

11. "It Can't Happen HERE!"
(from Sinclair Lewis' book)

DEAR DR. JESSUP:

(“Hm. ‘Dr. Jessup.’ Not me, m’ lad. The only honorary degree I’ll ever get’ll be Master in Veterinary Surgery or Laureate in Embalming.”)

A very dangerous situation has arisen here at Isaiah and those of us who are trying to advocate something like integrity and modernity are seriously worried—not, probably, that we need to be long, as we shall probably all get fired. Where two years ago most of our students just laughed at any idea of military drilling, they have gone warlike in a big way, with undergrads drilling with rifles, machine guns, and cute little blueprints of tanks and planes all over the place. Two of them, voluntarily, are going down to Rutland every week to take training in flying, avowedly to get ready for wartime aviation. When I cautiously ask them what the dickens war they are preparing for they just scratch and indicate they don’t care much, so long as they can get a chance to show what virile proud gents they are.

Well, we’ve got used to that. But just this afternoon—the newspapers haven’t got this yet—the Board of Trustees, including Mr. Francis Tasbrough and our president, Dr. Owen Peaseley, met and voted a resolution that—now listen to this, will you, Dr. Jessup— “Any member of the faculty or student body of Isaiah who shall in any way, publicly or privately, in print, writing, or by the spoken word, adversely criticize military training at or by Isaiah College, or in any other institution of learning in the United States, or by the state militias, federal forces, or other officially recognized military organizations in this country, shall be liable to immediate dismissal from this college, and any student who shall, with full and proper proof, bring to the attention of the President or any Trustee of the college such malign criticism by any person whatever connected in any way with the institution shall receive extra credits in his course in military training, such credits to apply to the number of credits necessary for graduation.”

What can we do with such fast exploding Fascism?

VICTOR LOVELAND.

So, still think "It can't happen HERE?"
