now they are beating up France...again...
Has anyone else noticed that the righties are beating up on France for their donations...?

On another board they are saying that 10 tons of aid is not enough...the money they sent is a joke...it's offensive...etc etc...

if you ask me this is just another reason that they can beat up on France because they opposed little Georgies war...

3. ANy time to piss on the French.
Drives me nuts.

on the other hand buying French Chocolate or French House Musice or French Lounge Music and feeling like you are doing something transgressive is somewhat enjoyable.

10. France ready to give 40 million Euros
Yeah. And also flying aboard French planes, using French communication sats... Soon asking the French to help build a few dozen nuclear power plants because of Peak oil...

By the way official help given by the French government is now 40 millions Euros ($54 millions), not taking into account private donations to NGO.

20. 5 days and US aid still absent although an army of US reporters are there
Edited on Thu Dec-30-04 03:42 PM by nascarblue
We hope Secretary of State Colin Powell was privately embarrassed when, two days into a catastrophic disaster that hit 12 of the world's poorer countries and will cost billions of dollars to meliorate, he held a press conference to say that America, the world's richest nation, would contribute $15 million. That's less than half of what Republicans plan to spend on the Bush inaugural festivities.

The American aid figure for the current disaster is now $35 million, and we applaud Mr. Bush's turnaround. But $35 million remains a miserly drop in the bucket, and is in keeping with the pitiful amount of the United States budget that we allocate for nonmilitary foreign aid. According to a poll, most Americans believe the United States spends 24 percent of its budget on aid to poor countries; it actually spends well under a quarter of 1 percent.

Bush administration officials help create that perception gap. Fuming at the charge of stinginess, Mr. Powell pointed to disaster relief and said the United States "has given more aid in the last four years than any other nation or combination of nations in the world." But for development aid, America gave $16.2 billion in 2003; the European Union gave $37.1 billion. In 2002, those numbers were $13.2 billion for America, and $29.9 billion for Europe.

Making things worse, we often pledge more money than we actually deliver. Victims of the earthquake in Bam, Iran, a year ago are still living in tents because aid, including ours, has not materialized in the amounts pledged. And back in 2002, Mr. Bush announced his Millennium Challenge account to give African countries development assistance of up to $5 billion a year, but the account has yet to disperse a single dollar.

5. They're ones to talk
Over in Freeperland, there was a post calling for everyone to abandon political differences to help the tragedy... Then the same poster and a few others reminded all loyal freepers not to donate to the International Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders, because the are left-wing organizations, and instead to donate to Salvation Army and church charities... where a full 20% of your money will go to helping out the people in Asia.
Then they proceeded to mock liberals and "Islamofascists" for not donating. Someone pointed out that some Islamic countries were actually within the typhoon radius and Islamic countries have so far given 10X as much as the United States, and that poster was immidiately jumped upon and devoured by the other posters.

8. Fuck the repugs!!! UNLESS they SCALE BACK Chimpo's inaugural...
Make it a simple ceremony on the south lawn of the WH, just like FDR did in 1945 (during WW2). I've heard that the cost of this year's inaugural is exceeding $40 mil! Take that money and help these people!!!:grr:

Re: FDR and WW2. I wasn't aware of that.

Might be worthy of it's own thread (if you haven't posted it). Just a suggestion.

>The fourth inauguration was conducted without fanfare. Because of the expense and impropriety of festivity during the height of war, the oath of office was taken on the South Portico of the White House. It was administered by Chief Justice Harlan Stone. No formal celebrations followed the address.<

22. i don't really get that outraged when i hear
xenophobic anglo hee-haws stinking of cheese whiz, natural lite, and dollar store parfume complaining about france. what do they know? let 'em go back to their "non athletic sport centered around rednecks" (NASCAR), beating their wives and dogs, and dying of malignant lip tumors. let them think they are on top of the world, have their glorious little fantasies where americas education system and quality of life is better than everyone else's, and ignore them completely.

Good for France!
