The Christmas spirit sure died awful fast.
All that stuff about giving and charity and love for your fellow man. A lot of people were all anxious to put the Christ back in Christmas. It's kind of funny how on December 26th hundreds of thousands of people desperately need help, and everybody turns into Ebenezer Scrooge.

Frankly, Americans should be ashamed of their country right now.

2. Wouldn't shame require a conscience?
If we had one of those, as a nation, we would have booted Shrubby out the moment his claims of WMD were found to be a lie.

4. I was noticing that too
I'm not sure if it me and my lingering malaise from Nov 2nd, or if it's because of the war, but this seems to be the most bare-bones christmas I've ever seen. The stores are drab, only a few people put up lights (and in our little town, it's usually very decorated during the holidays). Christmas cards were way down this year (I'll admit I only sent out a couple). Usually there are more stories on the news about charities and giving, and the usual warm-hearted stories about orphans getting toys and puppies getting homes. Toy drives were very low key this year.

Is every body bummed out, to busy, or just trying to survive?

World Bank Offers $250 Million in Tsunami Aid

<SNIP>
UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The World Bank (news - web sites) on Thursday offered $250 million for tsunami relief, bringing total aid contributions from around the world to nearly $500 million, the United Nations (news - web sites) said.

World Bank President James Wolfensohn announced release of the funds by telephone during a meeting at U.N. headquarters convened to plan the next steps in the unprecedented global relief effort, U.N. chief spokesman Fred Eckhard said.

The evil-ass World Bank is going to dwarf our paultry "state" donation. It's sick.

6. Are you sure individual Americans aren't donating alot money?
Obviously, the Shrub** is a greedy piece of shit, but I haven't seen any figures on what Americans themselves have donated.

10. You can make personal donations at Amazon.com
They've already collected $5.5 million.

http://s1.amazon.com/exec/varzea/ts/my-pay-page/PX3BEL97U9A4I/103-7242732-0553433

If you're not comfortable donating through Amazon, there are several other places where you can make a private contribution.

I don't think we should be ashamed of our country for anything related to the tsunamis. Our country is a bunch of private individuals who are more than capable of donating on their own. And they have. And they will continue to do so.

If you think we should be ashamed of our government, then I agree with you. But our government is not our country. And our government, under democratic or republican presidents, is always doing something that we should be ashamed of.

11. They gave to the church on Christmas Eve.
Their money disapeared into a poof of worthless prayer. They can feel good about themselves for doing nothing in a world that needs so much.

13. How about corporate americans or government americans?
Edited on Thu Dec-30-04 04:46 PM by HypnoToad
Both of them on their websites or speeches are telling individuals to donate. Why don't they put their money where their mouth is? Not all of us can afford to buy their products AND donate. Oddly enough, many who order what gets put on the websites CAN.

BTW: Welcome to DU! :bounce:
