Poll question: Have You Donated Money To Tsunami Relief Efforts? |
|
I gave as much as I could, seeing as how I don't have a job and I'm in college.

Amazon has a direct donation link to ARC on their home page - makes it super easy to donate. Here's a link to DWB: http://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/

8. Just remember that relief will be needed for years. |
|
If you want to donate money/items please think about waiting a month or more than donating. There is a lot of people giving now but plenty will be needed down the road when this is no longer a front page story and people move on to the next news cycle.
Think about this.... After 9/11 thousands of people donated blood to the ARC. They had a surplus, but blood expires and now there is again a shortage. If those who wised to donate blood had waited or even donated in the absense of a national tragedy then we would not have to worry about blood supplies running low.

The instinct is to donate immediately, as much to assuage your own feelings as to help others.
I waited a few days to absorb the situation, my need to DO something making me nuts, guilty and a bit manic...then today, in a calmer frame of mind, I did research on the charities I was considering. I made two donations today; one, to Doctors Without Borders, and the other to Oxfam.
Having read many of the articles on the disaster, the most telling item I took away is the remark from one relief official 'on the ground' that the 'crisis' phase on this one will last for a year! So there will be no lack of ongoing need to be met throughout 2005 and beyond.
In a few more days, we'll be in the New Year, and I for one will be taking another look at where I can cutback a little to give more. It wouldn't even be an issue if I were employed; but since I'm not, I haven't yet matched what I gave for 9/11, when I still had a job.
Money given now isn't quite the same as giving too much blood that can expire, but the urgency of giving something now and then letting that action remove the thought to help later seems nearly as bad.
On edit: correct typos

We donated to Doctors without Borders, and a kid sent a smaller donation of her own to the Red Cross.
