Putting It in Perspective
War and the Tsunami

-snip-

It is all too obvious that the US's relative disinterest in the disaster has to do with its cause: a random act of nature. Absent a human actor who can easily be held up to blame, an act of natural terror is not interesting for the powers that be, because it does not allow a reaction of the order of regime change or "shock and awe" bombardment. Really, who wants to feed the people who are starving for food, when it's so much more satisfying to feed those who seem to be starving for democracy? When there's no one to punish, no perceived political wrong to right, the US tends to ignore the crisis. Or, as with the devastating Bam earthquake in Iran, which killed over 20,000 and occurred exactly one year to the day before the tsunami, the government grudgingly pledged to help out with some relief - and then immediately started baying for Iranian blood once again. However, as the Times pointed out, the aid for Iran "still has not been delivered." We shouldn't hold our breath.

6. You made me…promises, promises
You knew you'd never keep…

I don't recall who performed it - it wasn't my style of music.

7. Dionne Warwick
sang the song. My wife was just saying that the promise was for 350 million now, we'll see was my reaction. I'm not going to hold my breath, but the chimps* feet should be held to the fire on this one.

5. Just a side note. Do you remember what was getting big news at the time
of the Bam earthquake? I distinctly remember an avalanche in a western state had trapped a family after they had neglected to heed the warning signs. (And by warning signs, I mean signs on posts saying "Stay Out".)

I also remember a freeper-type in my ex-SO's family making a remark along the lines of "one american's life is worth more a million brown ones" after I commented on the imbalance of the coverage. I'm still really pissed about it. Can you tell?

10. another side note, re: Bam...
CNN interview with an expert on the area/Iran. Sorry don't have links/names, just a sneezy cold filled head right now.

anyway, the interviewer kept pronouncing the name as 'Bam' (like BamBam from the flintstones), the expect repeatedly said it was properly pronounced 'Bam' (as in 'Bomb').

Guess CNN didn't want any of their freeper audience hearing Bomb Iran, Bomb Iran, cuz they'd cream their pantaloons.

just one of those odd things that made my ears perk a bit.
