My grandfather was a UMWA miner in WV in the 1920's to 50's. Those men spent their lives digging their own graves. Bush has gutted mine safety but that prick sure made a big deal about that mine rescue a couple of years back. I think he showed up for a photo op with the rescued miners.
The miners I knew growing up were all good union men and FDR Democrats. I looked up to them and admired them for their bravery and determination. Their fight for workers rights made a difference for all working people. Even after all these years miners are still my heroes. Every opportunity that's been given to me in this life was because of my grandfather and his union brothers and sisters.
It's a shame that 51 of them died last year. I offer condolences to their loved ones.
