Republican county attorney in Kansas changes registration to Libertarian

After being elected twice as a Republican to the position of county attorney in Anderson County, Kan., Fred Campbell decided following the Nov. 2 elections to drop his Republican Party affiliation in favor of the Libertarian Party, saying the GOP has abandoned the idea of minimal government.

Campbell was re-elected in November with no opposition. He has been a Republican for years, primarily because he's "always been in favor of less government rather than more," he said.

"I've always thought that the Republican Party was the major party that went along with that philosophy," Campbell explained. "But in the last four years, I've seen no evidence of that. For the last four years, we've had a Republican majority on the national and local level. But even though the Republicans had the majority in the national arena, I haven't seen a reining in of bureaucracy; I don't see anything getting smaller; I don't see government getting out of my life.

"Government is way too big, and too involved in every facet of our lives. After the election, I thought, 'Why do I maintain support for this Republican Party that is not doing anything to change the way things are?' So I decided to change my affiliation to something that more accurately represents what I believe."

2. I notice
he didn't say anything about the repugs being the party of evil, bigoted fuckwads. Well, at least he probably won't vote for another repug so that's a plus.

4. County and City attorneys are where the disconnect begins.
They "counsel" newbie commissioners so that the commissioners vote the way they want them to vote. Also, attorneys for developers get to talk to the city and county attorneys about their development plans even before those plans are presented before the commission and the public. You put the two things together and that's how you get the "Done Deal" syndrome in local government.

A Libertarian is 100 times worse than a Republican because they don't believe in asking developers to pitch in for any public infra-structure. Republicans, on the other hand, find a way to do it by giving away too much.

5. Why didn't he change parties
before the election? He'll kiss and make up with the GOP and all will be well before his next run for office.
He wants smaller government until it comes to his salary.
Remember US Sen. Bob Smith from NH?

6. Didn't Jeffords pull the same kind of bait-and-switch?
Didn't he get elected as a Republican and then switch his allegiances about 6 weeks after the election?

Not that it matters whether you call yourself a Dem or a Rep, your votes are still your votes, and the proof's usually in the pudding.

I just don't see why these guys don't come clean before their constituents head to the ballot box.
