I'm sick of Christian Born-Again brand (tm) on every magazine cover |
|
front page.
Just the other day we had a fundy convention of 6000 teenagers flood our city. Front-page news in our local newspaper. No mention of how they mix politics with their faith, how they hate gays and want to force women to bear children they don't want or may have conceived through rape/incest.
I don't even have much to add here, even though I'm the one posting. I'm just so sick of this twisted fundamentalism capturing the headlines as if it were newsworthy, and the sick truth of fundamentalism always predictably ignored.

1. I think your headline says something important about these people |
|
the (trademark). I think this form of "Christianity" is being sold much like merchandise to a gullible public. After all, these people never talk about helping the poor, turning the other cheek, etc. Many of them have the Ten Commandments signs in their yards, but I can't help but wonder how many of them go to Wal-Mart on Sunday to shop? Haven't heard Falwell or Robertson say we need to reenact blue laws. That's because it is part and parcel of the materialistic culture.
Commit a sin? Don't worry, just take the magic (tm) potion at your local fundy outlet and it's all wiped away, like Oxyclean takes the stain out of a tablecloth. Quick, easy, painless. No need to change your life. No need for self-examination. Hate some group? It's perfectly fine if you simply join the Anti-Gay Church of "Jaysus" (TM). We'll take that hate, burnish it to a nice shine, so it will be something proud for you to own!
Real Christians don't act this way, of course, and please please don't take offense at what I have written about the fundies who, I believe, are hypocrytes and not followers of Christ.

8. I like the merchandising spin you put on it |
|
great metaphor. I certainbly hadn't thought it out so fully; I just typed what came to mind. That, and I'm aware there are people of Christian faith who don't fit the (tm), phony hypocritical image--I was looking for a way to make that distinction.
"take that hate and burnish it to a nice shine, something proud for you to own"--one word: Wow!

2. Any convention of 6000 people is news. |
|
And, if they had mentioned all the things you said in your post, they'd have been editorializing.
Want to complain about front page news? How about the top story of the Atlantic City Press today (or yesterday)--about when to take Christmas trees down? :eyes:

4. Yea, but would they mention 6000 progressives getting together? |
|
Of course not. We don't even get coverage when many more people gather for protests.

The convention is just another thing I'm so sick of. I really don't need an influx of thousands of Bush Youth.
You're right about a convention of 6000 being news. On the other hand, I do remember a protest march of over 1 million, that didn't make front page:the March for Women's Lives last April. It was pushed to a tiny box on the 3rd page, while our intrepid paper of record ran a human interest story on the front page, about how tough Evangelical Christians' lives are. :wtf:
So rough, being narrow-minded, and cut off from reality in a democratic society, and trying to force your religion down other people's throats--ya, it's rough.
