Drudge: Dems want to show unseen torture video at Gonzalez hearings

Excuse me for linking Drudge - but I figured this is some interesting info for discussion. Dems ought to make this one an issue they're willing to stand on.

During upcoming confirmation hearings for Attorney General-nominee Alberto Gonzales, senior Democrats want to screen infamous videotapes showing Iraqis being abused at Abu Ghraib prison, top sources tell the DRUDGE REPORT.

The curtain is raised Thursday for the Senate Judiciary Committee's showdown with Gonzales.

The Bush White House counsel will be grilled about his role in formulating the administration's legal policies on coercive techniques in interrogations -- techniques some Democrats believe led to outright torture!

Yet it's the grainy prison videos, shot by a soldier's cellphone and never before viewed by the public, that threaten to turn the New Year ugly: A video of a handcuffed prisoner beating his head against a wall; a video of a group of hooded men shown masturbating.

The Pentagon and the White House hold the videos in their possession and have not authorized any public release, including to the senate.

These things are meant to humiliate and degrade the prisoners so that they will be more pliant and confess their crimes and to give info about their terrorist activities and their groups. Also, the photos and Vids were blackmail. They told the prisoners that they would be shown to the prisoner's family and friends if the prisoners did not co-operate with interogators. Muslims are real strict about their privacy.

And I am sick and tired of hearing from people who remain willfully ignorant of this stuff, as if the pictures and the testimony don't exist. Bring it out, again and again. I want to hear from Mr. Gonzalez' own mouth just what he considers acceptable torture, and what his commitment to human rights truly is. And why anyone would believe him seeing the natural fruits of his poisoned philosophy.
